An absolute classic

Hi Guys. I know I've been off the map for a while. The economy in Spain has continued to nose dive, unemployment rose to over 50 percent in rural areas and I was left with no choice but to leave my beloved Granada and move to the coast near Marbella. On top of that I had to close down a business in Nerja. That was followed by the hottest summer in living memory, a narrow escape from a wild fire and then floods. Its not all been bad though. I live by the sea again and have been working in a flamenco Tablao over summer. I have been playing lots of guitar and have been getting bookings for the coming year.

Today I received this email from the bookings page of my website....bear in mind this is a web site for a guitar player. I was howling with laughter and had to share it.

"We would like to check availability for our wedding day. Can you send prices for the following performances
2 x dancers with guitarist
3 x dancers with guitarist
2 or 3 dancers supplying own music C.D

Look forward to your reply"

Really??.... you are looking forward to my reply??.....Can you believe it??? They actually asked me to quote them for supplying dancers without booking me, the guitarist. I was contemplating sending a particularly sarcastic email back again but diplomacy (and the need for work) made me send the following.

"I am unfortunately unable to give you a quote for dancers without guitar as I am in fact the guitarist!"

I cannot tell how difficult it was to stop myself writing any more. Has anyone else ever had this happen? I am still in shock :D P

One possibility was suggested by my son. During the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal a poll was taken. 60% of people said President Clinton should be impeached by the House of Representatives for lying to the grand jury, 60% said he should not be tried by the Senate. (For those unfamiliar with the details of the American Constitution, impeachment by the House amounts to an indictment, and inevitably leads to a trial in the Senate.)

I asked my son whether he could explain the poll results: at least 20% of respondents favoring a legal impossibility. He was managing a marina at the time.

He replied, "Sure. The explanation is easy. Where I often stand by the cash register, there is a 4 by 6 foot (1.2 by 1.8 meter) sign on the wall right behind my head, reading 'Beer $4.00 per six-pack'. Out of every five people who approach, three will ask, 'Uhhh...what do you get for beer?'."

Or stay home and surf the net and make the dancers bring their own ipod or whatever, and charge the client your finder fee equivalent to your actual performance fee.

I have seriously considered make a "holographic flamenco guitar accompanist" that I can rent out to dancers with their choreographies pre programmed and I am projected onto the chair like I am really there yelling OLE!!! .....so I can either do other more fun gigs at the same time, or stay home and surf youtube/facebook etc.

So the "Virtual Ricardo" would actually be earning whilst you are at home watching youtube...this could also be a great way to avoid federal taxes too!!!

Gives me an idea for a movie plot
Year 2034...Spain is bankrupt and has been purchased by China.
Flamenco only exists in holographic form
Guitarists are now called "string weavers" programming self aware guitar playing holograms.
Holograms effectively work as slaves for their string weavers.
Holograms turn psychotic, committing crimes against their creators.

That is a classic! But also understandable. These are people who are mainly interested in the dancers.

I heard that some bride used a demo CD I used to hand out to prospective clients for her wedding processional.

I was stting in front of my big screen the other night wondering when an i phone would be able to project holograms, but you clearly are thinking ahead of me with the idea of programming your own. I'll tell you this, when I make a hologram of myself playing guitar, I'll use the speed up function on the picados.....
