Pains in left hand. . .

While stretching a couple of heavy bungee cords last week I pulled or twisted something in my left hand that's causing me a lot of pain and aggravation.

The pain is between the middle and ring fingers and seems to shoot down into the centre of the hand. Quite sharp. But its also erratic, and inconsistent. Not sure what triggers it?

My local GP says its just a ligament problem that will go away in a few days. But its been about two weeks since it happenend, and it still feels sharp.?

Do we have any medics, physios, or whatever, in here that might offer any advice.

I can still play, (sort of) but stretching can be painfull. I'm wondering if I should give it a rest for a while?

Would be hard, as I love to play for a couple of hours or more every evening.

I think you should rest it.

Spend a couple of hours practicing your right hand with muted strings every night and in a couple of weeks you will love it when you bring them together.

I had a wrist pain in my left hand recently and did this and noticed the improvement in my playing but I know its frustrating not playing music.

Good luck with it.

Ex-physio here. Two weeks isn't a long time really, healing has to take place, and that means maintaining good circulation through the hand. Start with soaking it in hot water -as hot as a hot bath, too hot and you'll blister - for fifteen minutes two or three times a day. No longer, as fiteen minutes opens the capillaries, any longer and they close up again. Keep the water hot. Massage the palm of your hand with the opposite thumb regularly, also the whole arm but lay off the stretches until it doesn't hurt any longer. Ligaments take longer to heal than muscles as they don't have their own blood supply, they take blood from the surrounding area.

After a few days it will be better or a scan may be needed. No reason to stop playing, unless it hurts, any exercise is good - but always within the limits of pain. Good luck!

Well, I certainly hope thats correct.

And thanks for your advice. Maybe I'll try that soaking routine. Right now I'm happy to try anything that seems like it may work.

Actually playing does not seem to bother it that much. Its usually when I relax that I feel the pains. Or when I press my hand flat on the table. THEN I feel it.

Thanks again.

Will advise.

Pain is your body telling you something, so don't ignore it. Perhaps you can give your left hand a rest, and focus on the right hand a bit more. Look at it as an opportunity instead of a negative.
