When reaming the holes for the pegs on a peghead guitar, how far out should I make them stick out on the front of the headstock?
I haven't built or played a peghead guitar before so excuse my ignorance, but how do I get strings on the pegs? Should I drill 2mm holes somewhere on the peg after I've fit it, and if so, how far down the peg?
RE: How are pegs supposed to fit? (in reply to Blair Russell)
Hi Blair, people do different things, I make the pegs come out around 8mm from the head, with the holes about 4mm down. 1.5mm. The 1st and 6th turn the other way often, so the strings go straighter. Assume you have a reamer AND peg shaper ?!

I have a reamer but no peg shaper, but I did practice fit the pegs on a piece of scrap. All the pegs fit but vary in size by a fraction. Should I wait till I have a peg shaper before attempting to fit the pegs?

Well I bought a peg shaver and didn't realize the difference it makes. The pictures show that they are way off when you buy them. Strung up the guitar today and they seem to work just fine.
