Peg dope

I made do with a lead pencil and some old soap, which worked really well. Then I bought some Hill's peg dope and it's too slippy. Maybe I used too much and will scrape some off to try again... but I may just go back to the pencil and soap.

I use a product called Bötels wirbelseife:

http://www.stradivarishop.com/product_info.php/info/p1064_Boetel-s-Wirbelseife.html

Its basically black gue..

When using soap, mix it with pumice or chalk. Then it works very well. Look for a greasy hippie soap.

I remembered the hippy soap and found that a few strokes of graphite carpenter's pencil on the peg before the soap seems works - stays stiff but smooth (as the bishop said to the actress) whereas the Hill's is a little too greasy but I will report back when I have scraped it off and tried it again.

I thought you were joking but its really there....oh the wasted years of mine getting it wrong ....the money lost on buying new pencils everytime it went a bit blunt ......

and now this.........How to Sharpen Pencils: A Practical & Theoretical Treatise on the Artisanal Craft of Pencil Sharpening for Writers, Artists, Contractors, Flange Turners, Anglesmiths, & Civil Servants

I see that would be 20 bucks well invested .......as they say /........

"A SHARP PENCIL IS THE SALVATION OF THE WORLD."

Too much dope? Just be cool, man, you'll come down eventually.

RNJ

Credit where it is due: I heard one of the guys behind the counter at Guitar Solo in San Francisco say this to the other one as he tried to tune up a guitar with slippery pegs. The store was still on Clement Street in those days...

..and our favorite sushi bar, Kabuto was just around the corner on Geary Boulevard, before Sachio-san moved to Shasta.

Simon.
Put a bit of chalk or pumice in the soap. That makes the difference. You can then find the right mix. Slippery, more chalk. Sticky, more soap.

Also, the hippie soap only works with chalk or pumice. Its to greasy to work without, but its greasyness its what makes it capable of taking more pumice (chalk). Real Hippie soap is not something you buy in a posh London (or Bath) shop... No no, When there´s a market somewhere near Stonehendge, you´ll find the real thing. All handmade, eco, nature, freakie hippie soap made by a natural smelling hippie.
And when there, make sure to buy a lot of sweets and bakery. There´s nothing like real hippies when it comes to bakery.

I tried that Hills stuff too. And had the same experience, too slippery. I think its probably more suitable for Violins, Violas, etc.

Anders' stuff worked much better, but I still have problems with 'real' pegs. Guess it depends a lot on who fits the pegs. . .

So I have to drive to Stonehenge on the next Summer Solstice to sniff out patchouli hippy soap because I bought an Anders guitar????

I'll nip over to Glastonbury. It's closer and the dippy hippies are there all year.

You´re lucky guy. You have hippies around where you live. Here in Huelva, hippies are realy scarce. I miss hippies.
But be carefull..... I Glastonbury.. They´ve told me that there are lots of hippiescumbags there. Thats not the real things. Even though I have to admit that they also make very nice sweets and bakery.

what about lava soap--has pumice and soap all mixed into one bar. great for scrubbing clean hippies, auto mechanics' hands and polishing headlamp plastic covers when they get dull and foggy looking. works well with pegs to boot.

If you can't find any in Glastonbury, don't worry! There are plenty of dirty hippies in San Francisco who don't use much soap. I could mail you some authentic California Dirty Hippie Soap, it will give your playing some extra funkiness.

You guys are mixing up things... I´m talking about real hippies. The clean ones. Not the crusty scumbags hanging around.
And when I say hippie soap, I talk about soap made by hippies (clean ones )
It seems to me that we have a problem with defining hippies.

Btw. I love your avatar Stephen.

A clean Hippie ...??? that really exists ?? I was assuming the stonedhenge , afghan coat , etc...I'll have to think about it for a while ................
..nope ..........

I was wondering how you managed to get "Soap " and " HIppie" in the same sentence .........

Ahhh many years ago I watched the sun rise at stonhenge with big "J" after a great night of Steve HIllage .........AAAhhhhh ...... ...man....

So I cleaned off the Hill's Peg Dope and went back to my carpenter's pencil and cheap soap. Worked a treat. The graphite drawn onto the peg supplies the bite and soap, the lubrication.

Your experience may differ but the pegs stay where I put them but turn easily.
