if he wants to mangle a Dreadnaught, I say he should be encouraged. The world will be better off with one less of those awful bluegrass machines.

He is not looking at making this a Flamenco guitar britguy so no worries. The vision is a customized, vintage, dreadnought crossover with amplification.
You do bring up a good point about body depth with electronics but that can be easily chopped down with a quality saw. I would look at it as an opportunity to access the inside braces and do some real custom work, LED's around the perimeter perhaps. If they could be wired to alternate so it looks like the lights are travelling around the outside perimeter of the guitar body that would give huge stage presence. Need some bright colours too cuz the whole mother of pearl thing was so yesterday.

Hi britguy. I see Sean brought you mostly up to speed on my plans and what the situation was. He forgot to mention the laser engraving of Rodrigo and Gabriella's protrait that I was going to burn into the top... but we shall see.

get a d' Darrio over wound string about .056 in diameter and use it as the lowest bass string. Then use a regular set of high tension strings and discard the high E string-

That is a really interesting idea to consider. Thanks much for the suggestion! As far as removing mass, I'll see what I can do. My original plan was to remove only bridge mass, mostly from the treble side of the bridge. I had in mind to try using wound strings from a set of those "silk and steel" strings with with high tension polymer trebles. Considering the amount of glue holding the top plys together and the bracing, I didn't really expect too much change in tone though. If you think it will make a noticable improvement, I'll try it.

Figuring out how to remove the back without destroying the plastic binding is more than I was planning on, but I'm not opposed to learning how to do it now as opposed to later. It won't be the end of the world if I do destroy something in the process given where I'm starting at.

Now, now, Stephen; don't be such a snob. Those 'machines' DO have some uses.

(For example; I could always count on driving my neighbours crackers when I twanged away on mine. . . )

Here's a pic of the old bugger. Haven't tried playing it in more than ten years, but still sounds O.K. when stroking those old rusty strings. . .

Now, how would this look if re-inventerd as a "flamenco" guitar???
