Jaleos

Hi all,

I have compiled a tune comprised so far of 4 different things:

1) Some introductory material similar to that from a tune El Pele and VA recorded long ago;

2) Some falsetas of VA from at least 2 bulerías, and one jaleos he did with Remedios Amaya;

3) Some simple chord progressions my bassist and I worked out;

and

4) I have also written in the chart some space for a percussion and dance section when we perform.

The ending is something I came up with.

The rhythm toward the beginning of the tune is essentially like jaleos, in 6s, then the feel changes toward bulería in 12s, then goes back to jaleos for the end.

In your views, what do you feel needs to be present to call it a jaleos, apart from the underlying rhythmic feel in 6s? Does it have to have a letra/verse chord progression?

Most everything is based in the C# phrygian cadence common to bulerías lots of guitarists are experimenting with.

Share your thoughts with me.

Mainly it's just about the cante and groove. There is an example I put my own guitar to the cajon and voice only:

Thank you Ricardo.

I will post what I am working on next week for some critique, I would appreciate your input.

I figured it was mostly those things.

I don't have a jaleos rhythm that I like. I will have to ask a percussionist to record something for me that works.

For now, I have adapted a verdiales rhythm that is vastly similar.

Canizares played the only Jaleos I´ve ever liked.. It just limits the player too much I think.. Not my taste. As well as Cana, Garrotin, Peteneras, Taranto and very often Seguiryas. All for dance of course.

i kind of know what you mean but it just depends on the player too....technically there no reason why it should...but doing too much in jaleo and not allowing that hollow space kills the groove imo...i love jaleo cante...so cool ! i think of it as a tangos feel in bulerias timing

It depends more on the taste of the dancer than on the player. Beside of that telling a story and grooving do not exclude each other. But in playing for dance, everything below exceptional guitar playing and experience-level, reduces the player to a cassette recorder for the dancer. I got out of that slavery some time ago and to be honest, I never liked to be a metronome. Don´t tell me you like to strum 2 chords over and over and like it. That´s stupid. Its only enjoyable if you got pretty girls dancing in front of you. But we all know the average women who learn flamenco.. My experience is 1 out of 50 is pretty. That´s simply not enough. ;)

but that's the thing, imo jaleo is not about being pretty ..its about that unmistakeable groove that sometimes can only be achieved by that cool repetition ...and again i DO understand how you feel...il post some jaleos i love

I do. and YOU are stupid. And the kind of chicks you think are pretty is also questionable. Just cuz you suck at jaleos doesn't mean you shouldn't keep working on it. Its fun idiot!!!

Giving up on being a metronome prematurely= no chicks and scientist career only.

Working on sexy jaleo groove with 2 chords= beating off top 2% hottest women in the world with a stick cuz your tired and running low on gene spreading energy.

Then I presume you haven’t heard Carmen Amaya with Sabicas on guitar:

Anyone who has played for dance has felt the boredom that can come with repetition. Sometimes you do feel trapped within a simple chord progression. However, I think, at least speaking for myself, I have come to the conclusion that it's really a lack of effort and creativity on my part when that happens. I think you have to then shift and create something rhythmically interesting, or devise some harmonic change that works within the palo.

I too have definitely felt trapped within traditional tientos, tarantos and seguiriya at times. But I think we just have to be very creative in how we make it interesting for ourselves, clear for the dancers, and comprehensible for the audience. It's a very hard thing to do all that and sound musical, original, yet flamenco at the same time. But it seems that is our challenge.
