Lionel, I live in Boston, and of course I know all about Katrina. Me and my fellow guitar students from the conservatory played a few benefit concerts to help the victims. I am very sorry about your teacher's house, and I hope he's all right.

You can sit in any position, as long as you feel comfortable. My teacher, Eliot Fisk, plays his concerts in a classical position, but when he's teaching he sits cross-legged or in an old-fassioned flamenco position. You should be able to do the same without a problem. Be flexible.

Yes, I am currently teaching.

I think that Serranito plays 3 finger picado. If you've heard him, and I know Todd has, you'll agree that his picado is ridiculous. I really like the sound he gets and I don't know anyone else who does.

It seems to me that 3 finger picado could work very well for sextuplets, 3 a string. I have messed around with it a bit and especially if you work around the crossings by fiddling with the LH fingering you could get it going. For example....

ascending run from the sixth string...

E F# G , A B C, D E F#, G A B, C D E (here you would have to stretch), then shift to 2nd pos, F# G A, shift again, B. That could possibly work.

That's such a pain to play. I would do E F# G A , B C D , E F# G , A B C, D E (iami ami ami ami am).

That's good news, Lionel. I wish I could come with some concerts, but you know, career is a tricky thing.

Grisha, I guess I need to work on my shifts, they really slow me down! The chromatic run in Capricho really messes me up.

If you are playing from A to aa, 5th string to 2nd string, I play on the 2nd string,
[c c# d d#] [e f, f# g g#] a
16ths............quintuplets....a

It's just horrible!

RE: Scale runs? (in reply to Miguel de Maria

i have just worked out a pattern that i will use for practicing different shifts moving backwards as i descend the strings in picado. its a bit tricky to get very fluent with as you are moving down the strings and backwards towards the bridge..

-8-6-5-------------------------------------------------
----------4-5-7-----------------------------------------
------------------6-4-3---------------------------------
--------------------------2-3-5-------------------------
-----------------------------------4-2-1----------------
-------------------------------------------0-1-3-4-1-0---

slightly off the track i know but i was working on it and thought i would input!

RE: Scale runs? (in reply to sorin popovici

Miguel, we all need to work on our shifts. I saw a video of Heifetz today, and have to say that guitar technique has a long way to go.

I never bother to go on the 2nd string in Capriccio, I just play a normal chromatic scale and end up on the fifth fret of the 1st string. But if you just have to end up on the second string, there is a way. Start on the 6th string and stay on it until A on the 12th fret; then stretch the first finger to 8th fret on the fifth string and play until 11 fret, then stretch to 7th fret on the fourth string... and so on.

Or you can just slide your index finger all the way to the 10th fret of the 2nd string, playing the notes with the right hand as you pass the frets. Coordination issue, sure, but when done right it is really smooth.

Not so flamenco, but a contribution nonetheless - hope it looks right. I appreciate all the other scales, esp. the audio uploads (strong work Flo).

Grisha,
thanks for the fingering, I'll try it. Right now I shift in the middle of the quintuplet and it really just doesn't work.

I like the glissando, but I haven't worked on it. I have Sharon Isbin playing it and I really like the sound of it. I'll have to get that one down :)

RE: Scale runs? (in reply to sorin popovici

I tried to fix my post, hope it's more readable. I then made a PowerTab, but then realized I couldn't upload it here.

It's not really flamenco, I don't think. I'm not very strong in the theory department, but the scale is in the Key of A (alpha position at the 5yh fret?). It's a basic scale with a twist. Like I said, not really flamenco, but I wanted to contribute something. I've only been at this flamenco business a few months, the more into it I get, the more I'll try to make my contributions with a little mroe flamenco-ness.

I wish I could upload some audio for ya. I have a pretty decent Digital Camcorder, but my only mic blows. When I do record my playing, I have to turn the gain up so high on my preamp that there is this horrible hissing noise on the recording. I'll get a good mic soon, and will be an uploading fool, you'll see!

EDIT: I'm now thinking that the scale is actually in the key of F major.
