I have been using these Schertler tuners on some of my guitars, made in Switzerland. I like them, they are light and dependable. I think for guitars with more than six strings they are ideal. They look better than Gilbert's in my eyes.
I highly reccomend them. I know this might be useful for some of the other luthiers who have made ten string and other post six string guitars. They work fine on flamencos too, they are quite light. I think they would especially look right on a negra.

Hello, I know it is a matter of taste, but I once saw a Conde with its fustero tuners replaced by these and was horrified by the look of them. One major downside in my estimation is the requirement for 12 screws and holes in the headstock in lieu of the usual 6 or 8. More sources for rattles down the road. But to each their own! How cost effective are they compared to alternatives?

I don't think I would recommend these for older Spanish guitars as replacements, as you say they are not the style. On newly constructed guitars designed with them in mind they work aesthetically. They are much more attractive and guitarish than Gilbert's which is the other affordable go to tuner for post six string guitars. The screws won't rattle if they are put in correctly.
One clear advantage is that if a worm gear or shaft etc. gets damaged or worn you can simply replace the effected individual tuner without replacing the whole tuner side. Of course you have to know a guitar maker who has extras.x
The price per set is about $130.00 US. That in mind when outfitting a guitar with more than six strings they are very cost effective when compared with Gilbert's or some thing like Rodger's or Alessis custom tuners for guitars with seven to ten strings. They are lighter than the other brands too which helps keep headstock weight down on the bigger headstocks.
I think the bright gold style Schertlers would work better on a classical or a negra and not be an eyesore.

I remember checking them out somewhere and when you add up the weight they're not that light. I'll try a set someday, the black ones but I'll flush mount them and maybe make custom wooden buttons.
