Jose Merce - london

just got back from this gig! it was fantastic.
Ive never seen him before and dont really know much of his material but i must say it was great. with diego del morao on guitar ((who was great btw) and palmeros that looked suspiciously like moraito and dolly parton respectively, it was thoroughly enjoyable.

he opened with a Malaguena followed by a long solea and a seguiriyas.

he then brought out the palmeros and played an alegrias in C followed by fandangos, tientos/tangos and then a bulerias half of which he did without a mic. there was more audience participation than im used tp in this kind of setting, with the crownd singing along to his encore of Al Alba.

A great evenings entertainment which i enjoyed with Adam (ramparts) and my good friend who was experiencing his first flamenco show...he loved it!!!

Actually, it's just Adam now

Yes, great show! The festival on the whole was phenomenal. I caught Vicente, Gerardo, and José Mercé (Stu was at all of these and also one of the dancers). All of them were wonderful in their own way. Vicente was his usual self, very melodic, soulful, a lot of emotion in that concert. Gerardo was pure flamenco, even when he was going off the walls (he's more than made up for his injury; every absurd alzapúa run was followed by a brief break while the crowd roared its approval). The concert ended with about twenty minutes of non-stop fiesta por bulerías, it made me want to pack up my stuff and hop on a one-way flight to Jerez! José Mercé was having the time of his freakin' life up there. He mentioned that he always had lots of fun performing in London, and it showed. He was full of life, and had a huge smile on his face at the end of every song. I was super pleasantly surprised to see Diego del Morao was accompanying, which I didn't know until he came out on stage. What a combination!

Each of those concerts was followed by at least two, usually more, foro members converging in the local Red Lion pub.

I saw him there too and met up with the late Moraito afterwards for a bit of fun. Good memories.

Yep. I'm with Stu. Fantastic performance. As always. Absolutely top drawer. Pulmones? Phwoar. Diego was great and I particularly liked Merce blasting out the 'Poco de nada' letra that, I think, comes from Luis, el Poeta. Fantastic.

Just one small observation. I've seen Merce umpteen times. Always with Morao. I don't remember him ever getting up to dance. Not once. He would sometimes cajole Morao to get up and that is... well... that's pretty good for any aficionado. But I noticed Merce got on his feet at that homenaje for Morao in Madrid and, again, in 'Londre'.

What a gent. I only hope he got something back for the effort he made.
