It's Flamenco, NOT 'flamingo'!

I just wonder how many other have this same frustration with the general populace confusing the word 'flamenco' with the word 'flamingo'???

I run into this fairly often, and am usually eager to explain the differences.

The most recent one happened just the other day, when a quite voluptuos young Italian lady was cutting my hair and commented on my right hand nails being much longer than my left.

After explaining that I played 'flamenco' guitar, her immediate response was: "Oh, I just LOVE that 'flamingo' music, its so exciting. I really like those Gypsy Kings, and the way they play it. . ." ( + more slushy ramblings. . .)

This time I didn't bother to explain.

But, I gave her a tip anyway. . .

I bet Flamingos get really pissed off with folk calling them Flamencos.

When I was in Brasil I used to get pissed off at folk spotting the long nails on my right hand and asking "Oh, do you play the violin?".
When it first happened, I said "No...the guitarra.." and he looked kind of puzzled.
I thought to myself, "What a bleeding thicko this guy is..."

When it kept happening I thought "Are all these bastards retarded or something...??"

Even when I had the guitar with me they would point and say "Ah...a violin player."

It was driving me nuts!

It took a few weeks later until I found out that Brasilian/Portuguese for guitar is "violao" with the "ao" sounding nasal, like an "n".

I requested a number of flamenco books from the library recently and was annoyed and mildly surprised that a reference librarian with a masters degree called me and said "Your flamingo books are in."

To be fair, it's a very unfamiliar word, flamingo IS a familiar word and people say/see/hear what they are acquainted with. Even my family that knows well it is not pronounced 'flamingo' often slip up when pronouncing it. They get a frowny look on their face just trying to say 'flamenco', it's rather amusing.

Yes correct , as in Portugal , if you use the word Guitarra you are then refering to their own , type of banduria ,mainly for Fado .. this one
and as an extra bit, the teardrop on the top can tell you what part of Portugal it is from....I have one but I left it in Portugal at my brothers , I'll get it next time I go back

I remember when I first moved to Montreal from England I heard this strange question:

"What's the first thing two pink flamingos do when they get a house?"

And the answer:

" Put two plastic French Canadians on their front lawn. . .!"

(Those plastic pink flamingos looked real pretty sticking up through a foot of snow. . .)

Sorry to go off at a tangent, but that's just the way my brain works...

There was a programme on BBC Radio 4 about whether young people were more intelligent or less intelligent than our generation.

One jaded contributor said he was walking his dog in the park when a little girl ran up to him...

He said, "She didn't ask the dog's name, or even ask what kind of dog it was....she simply pointed to it and said, 'Is that a dog?'..."

I dunno...but it made me laugh anyway...

Besides, if I may ask, how to tell when a flamingo gets pissed?

so i actually had that flamingo one the other day too...dummies!

i wonder if there are any other arts/music/things that have a similar sort of unfortunate "sounding like something else more well know" situation...

I mean if you say to someone "I dance salsa" they never go "oh yeah I love Saucer!!"

or maybe they do actually....i dont dance saucer so im not in the best position to say....

anyone had any experience of others?
