Revelations?

I´ve run across 2 things in the past couple of years that radically changed my playing for the better.

The first revelation came from El Carbonero in Jerez when I was taking lessons. He has a policy of not letting anyone play with a capo. He also tells you use to practice at home without it. Well, at first I didn´t think I could do it. I have small hands and had trouble making stretches even with the capo. Now, after 2 years I can make stretches that were impossible for me in the past.

The second came from our own Miguel de la Maria. It was his explanation of how to use the thumb to play apoyando. It was something he picked up in Sevilla. He expained that you should push the thumb into the string and come to rest on the next string. I hadn´t been playing thumb apoyando because it was awkward, but after I practiced the way he explained it became quite easy and natural. Now I can play thumb apoyando even with arpeggios and tremolo. Something I could never do in the past. Thanks for the tip Miguel.

I still can´t play worth a sh**, but these are 2 memorable things I´ve picked up recently. I´d be interested in hearing any similar experiences from others.

Phil

Hi Phil

Something I picked up around, was to file the nail straight ( not too round or pointy)
It forces you to play with a straight hand.

If you file the sides too much, it will make the nail weak, and it becomes a " hook"

Also the knowledge, that bad filed nails make you adapt your technique on a bad way.

Peter.
