full time guitar schools in spain?? 
Can anyone help me on this one? I'm seriously considering spending a year in Spain to improve my playing and need information on full time courses available. The only one i have come accross is at the Heeren foundation in Seville. Seems to have very good teachers and is not extravagantly expenisve but i used to live in Seville and would would prefer a different city. Does anyone know of any schools??i would greatly appreciate info on this one and would love to hear from anybody who has attempted full time guitar school learning in the past.

Hi Dylan

If you are so very seroious with flamenco, perhaps concider the rotterdam concervatory?
You can study there flamenco. Paco Pena has developed the studie , and gives lessons there too.

One of the Guys who teach at Cristina Heeren had studied at Rotterdam.

Maybe an Idear..

The funny thing about the Rotterdam admission requirements for the flamenco program is that an aweful lot of very talented flamenco guitarists who play regularly in Jerez etc. wouldn't be able to get in

Consider the flamenco conservatory in Cordoba, where Paco Serrano and others teach.

I recommend going to Jerez and looking up Fernando Moreno, Antonio Jero, El Carbonero, or others. You could take some lessons with each of these people and get some different perspectives. There are also other guitarists that post notices for lessons at the CAF. You'd be able to arrange lessons around your schedule AND be in the epicenter of the Flamenco world.

Hi Jamey

It is allready 15 years ago, but I played by than for two year guitar ( flamenco ofcource)
My teacher from that time found me talented,and had arrainged for me an audition.
I had to play a few pieces, was nervous like hell, and they let me in.

The only thing they asked was if I spoke Spanish,I did not want to spoil things now, because they let me in allready, so I said a bit......

The next thing they asked if I could read musical notation, ( I had to be carefull now, could not read a thing) and said, well, I can read notes, but I cannot play from paper...

That was it!

Unfortunatelly, for the flamenco annyway, my live headed up in another direction, so I could only studie for a year with Ricardo Mendeville , the head teacher overthere..

Well, Dylan, the story is a bit complicated.

I lived in Amsterdam at that time, and I could do the first year at the Amsterdam Concervatory.
The year after that, I could start the second year in Rotterdam than.
So, I did the first year, but after that year, I had to go to Rotterdam, but my live was in a turning point by than, so I could not go to Rotterdam every day to studie.

I had to quit than. (still hurts a bit!)

Good suggestion there from Anders. I know some-one at that school but he was quite experienced already. In Granda there is Carmen Las Cuevas and I've met loads of guitar students who have been happy with their teaching. It depends on your level I suppose. In the book 'Parrot in a Peppercorn tree" the writer goes to one of Emilio's advanced classes and has to sneak out red faced.

I did a summer course at the Heeren institue. I would recommend it with reservations, if Sevilla would be in your plans. One of the teachers there, Tino van der Smaan, did go through the whole course at Rotterdam.

At the school, I met several students from paco Pena's school. It seems like a good program.

You might do just as well getting private lessons from an excellent teacher, and going to occasionally seminars such as gerardo nunez' and Manolo Sanlucar. Obviously you will have to get together with dancers and singers in the latter case.

I must admit that my mind does boggle at the thought of any sort of full-time course or school of Flamenco guitar.
I mean...it's not exactly like learning Physics or History, is it?

I'm still trying to get to grips with techniques I learned "how" to do years ago, it's just actually doing them that poses the problem and takes the time.

For me, a couple of hours with a teacher, say every three months or so, to sort out any questions and technique, would be all I could cope with frankly...

I'm casting my mind back to my college days, where sleepy eyed and jaded, I'd open my books at 9.00am and write like hell (except for a 10 min Fag break) till 12.45pm, when we'd all happily adjourn to the local Chinese Restaurant for an "El Cheapo" lunch of Cornflour Soup followed by a Curried "thing", and then back to more writing from 2.00pm till 4.30pm and then back home for a jolly evening's homework!

The thought of doing that with the guitar, is not only incredulous, but I would think frankly impossible for anyone IMO?

Ron,
people learn skills like carpentry and becoming an electrician through an apprenticeship system where they are in almost constant contact with a master. What you are describing sounds to me like a "lib arts" type of thing, creative writing or independent research. But guitar sounds a lot more like a "guild" activitity than creating opuses on some detail of Joyce's penmanship.

Dylan,

I haven't been in contact with El Carbonero for more than a year, so his prices may have gone up. He used to charge 15 euros per lesson. I've requested information about Fernando Moreno from 2 different people on this forum who have had lessons with him, but I've never received replies.

El Carbonero has a web where his method of teaching is explained. A google search should find it.

If you're the adventurous type, I really believe that you can do this on your own at much less cost than by going through Duende Lenguas or one of the established schools in Sevilla or Granada. And I don't hestitate in recommending Jerez as THE place to learn and experience Flamenco.

thanks for that phil..ill definately be back to you with some questions....jerez seems like a good place for the job..lots of flamenco, much less touristy than seville or granada and cheaper...any idea what the going rate is for rent these days in jerez?

Sorry for late reply, I wanted to check with Emilio first. He now charges 30 euros for a private lesson. Alternatively he does group classes at Carmen Las Cuevas which obviously work out cheaper. Spoke with Emilio this morning and he says of course he can give discount for regular classes, seeing as it's you well actually for anybody booking a course of classes.
