Are there any Spanish members here?

Hi guys. I have had a look round this site which I think is great, but I haven't noticed any members from SPAIN. There seems to be the whole world here but no SPANIARDS. Is it because this site is in English or what?

Hi Waldo,

There are some spaniards here from time to time. I would say that language is one barrier, not to mention the fact that spaniards can learn and share at the local flamenco bar etc...

Edit, Henry you were too fast

Quite a few members live in Spain like me, Pimientito, Anders, Stephen Hill, Luke, Sean, Estela and Norman. Did I leave anyone out ?

Because people from spain don't like flamenco as much.

Strange but true ......
since I lived there for so long ,,,,,, the youth want "modern " music and yet when it comes to party time they all know the steps .........

Remember"you want what you cant have "....not what you have every day ....

Did I say that right ??

You know, spain is a very poor country. There are only a few spanish people who can afford an internet connection.

Jokes aside, that could also have the following reasons.

1. There is a spanish flamenco forum.
2. If you are spanish and you want to know something about your country.. would you ask foreigners about that?
3. Most spanish people probably think, other nations have no idea about flamenco.

We can summarize it to arrogance and problems with english. Sounds very harsh but I think that fits to the majority. Its exactly the same with "other people than black people can´t make blues music". And my mom makes the best pudding in the world.

I wouldn't say it's just arrogance and language problems. I mean, let's say you're living in Jerez and you have some question about something or other flamenco, why would you go to this foro (especially that isn't in your native tongue) when you could go down the calle to the local peña and ask a grizzled old 80 year old singer or something? This foro is a lot more important for people who don't have that sort of resource at their doorstep. People like Kate, Mark, and Norman are the exception, not the rule, and we're lucky to have them!

thats true but I guess it depends where they are from Spain. I would guess that spaniards from andalucia would like flamenco more than other parts of spain.
I can see them getting bored of hearing the same stuff for their whole life and want to hear something western and new to them

In general I wrote the same but more broadly. That example is not really valid coz there are many more cities in Spain than Jerez (which is one of the central points of flamenco...) where flamenco does not exist and nobody knows anything about it, except there was Camaron.

RE: Are there any Spanish members here? (in reply to Waldo

HEllo guys, I'm Spanish myself, ummm, I think that one of the main reasons that there are no Spanish people here are, 1st, the language.
We are not specially famous for our knowledge of english and other languages.
Actually I think that we are one of the countries in Europe that worse english speaks as an overall. If you go to Portugal for example, which are our neighbours, I can tell you that a vast majority of portuguese youth speaks english pretty well.
Our Education system, language fonetics and other factors are the main reasons for our
lack of knowledge in foreign laguages.

That's one main reason why spanish people are not in this forum. I don't think arrogance is a reason why spanish people are not here. Not in these days, flamenco as had a very big evolution. Profesionals and musicians of flamenco have realised that there are many non spanish people, people that have not been raised in Spain and that are amazing flamencos.

It is true, there are the old critics, which close themselves to mantain purity of flamenco, and are very sceptic when they see someone which is not spanish, or even andaluz, that tries to perfom "el arte del flamenco"but I don't think this helps flamenco at all.

People like Paco de Lucia, Vicente Amigo, keeping and open mind, which leads to creativity, those are the real "light" to the art.

From my point of view 2 things are important in Flamenco,

a) work, work, work, practice, practice, practice.
b) feeling and honesty when you play.

And any human being, from Australia, Japan, Spain, England or whatever place, can do that. Like in any other kind of music.
The only difference I see is that if you have not been raised in Spain, maybe you would have to work a little harder to get more previous knowledge.
Personally, I do not believe "you have to be spanish to be able to perform flamenco when we are talking about guitar and dancing.
"El Cante"is more debatable.

You can learn from everybody, foreign, spanish, japonese, from the one that masters the guitar to the one that has been playing just for a few years.

Another reason why few spanish people are here, I guess, is because of access to information that regards flamenco. If you live in Spain obviously you would look for 1st hand information, which is already in spanish, you learn from family, friends, from schools, from performances, concerts, flamenco bars, the radio, the TV, etc.
You have direct access to the source.

Another reason may be, that not all spanish people like flamenco.
Specially young people, and specially "flamenco JONDO"
A lot of people like "flamenkito, rumbitas, etc" but not "Flamenco Jondo"
When Spanish young people go to party, they don't want to listen to a "Seguiriya" jejeje

saludos, I hope this answeers some questions

Thanks for that nice post, Pingaloka.

We need some sensible calming reason around here at times to stop people blowing a gasket.

(I don't know what the equivalent Spanish term is for "blowing a gasket", but would be pleased to know...)

cheers,

Ron

It was not my intention at all to be a smart ass, but to encourage people which are starting to know this world to feel freely positive. To discart any kind of predujice.
Also answering other questions about spanish culture, e.g. our lack in knowledge on other languages, an issue that not everybody may know....man from the 7 Hills
