Yeah, I agree Simon. I always thought that he played more like a guitarist in a Jazz combo in that he always tried to fit in, rather than stand out. BTW..although he was official "lead" player in the band, John Lennon sometimes did some of the lead parts too. What I always liked about George is that he never looked "cool", what with the big Bert Weedon type guitar worn high up LOL, but as the programme points out, all his lead pieces are so memorable and was definitely a big part of the Beatles' sound.
