Bass Guitar / Normal / Alto

So the talk about 7 string which I would not want for flamenco had me thinking about having additional range like Sax players with their soprano sax, alto sax, tenor sax depending on the range of the music they are playing. Can I use the same braced six string guitar and just change strings to lower or raise the range? So instead of a 7 string can I use that Low B with the regular strings - 6 through 2 above it? Does that put any more strain on the regular six string instrument? I assume that raising the range by adding a High A and only going down to a low A will not put any additional strain.
