I Don't Understand This

Hi Alll,

One of my favorite rock singer who adores flamenco and claims to have study flamenco dance for over 20 years, put out this video on youtube.

My quesition is this is one of her compositions, and a flamenco dancer is dancing to this song called Mexican Moon.

This isn't flamenco! My questions is how is this flamenco dancer able to dance to this song when it's clearly not flamenco?

Thanks

Kalo

Well, she definitely appears to be doing just exactly that.

In fact, soon after I hit "play", my flamenco-dancing wife said from the other room, "that's not flamenco!"

Yet the dancer is certainly executing some flamenco dance moves, isn't she?

I'd suspect that, really, you could put some tango dance moves on just about any music with 4/4 time. Honestly, I only watched about half of it, but it seemed like even the footwork fit in with the piece.

I'd also guess that you could fit waltz steps over a solea.

Thanks for your reply vuduchyld! What you are saying about putting some tango dance moves on a 4/4 time pop song makes sense!!

Thanks for the reply!!

I find that when I am somewhere that has music playing (that isnt flamenco) I can still usually practice my palmas along with it, a lot of stuff in 6/8 - 3/4 time can feel like a 12 count if you add accents

Rock singer? Mexican moon? Flamenco? Steel string guitar?

They all go together so well. No wonder its such an awesome video.

ToddK,

As much as I really respect this artist as she has done GREAT work with her band, I AGREE with your reply!

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw this! The song title itself Mexican Moon, and steel string guitar doesn't match with flamenco and no flamenco palos at all!!

She didn't have to work on compas playing this song, and you KNOW the flamenco dancer made it work because of her knowledge on flamenco dance!

Thanks to all the replys!

All good points, the best you could do with this song is Rumba-it-up.......

Rico_Kiko,

I actually did rumba up this song for a friend who actually sang it. Truthfully, this is a good song, but, this video doesn't do her justice.

I am kind of disappointed on how the singer claims she has study flamenco for 20 years (granted she is a rock/pop singer) with a loyal following, who CLAIMS to LOVE, flamenco.

On their last tour they had a flamenco guitarist open up for them. Yes, a real flamenco guitarist with a dancer as well. I thought it was great because they jammed buleria, and the dancer was GREAT!!!

Anyhow, she also went to spain to study dance about and also studies dance in LA. She should know better, however, I wonder why the flamenco dancer agreed to dance to this song?

Thanks,

Kalo

Well, I am not familiar with that singer, but if she is well-known, the dancer might do something like that just for the exposure.

I'm not much of a flamenco player yet, but to give you a similar situation....I love bluegrass and I do a bluegrass version of "Sweet Child of Mine" by Guns'n'Roses. If they ever invited me to join them in a video, even if they were playing rock and I was standing there with my Taylor acoustic, you can bet I would do it!

Hi vuduchyld,

I agree with you the flamenco dancer doing this for the exposure, but, damn, they should of done it right!!! This singer has a loyal following, and I really want flamenco to be represented in the correct way!!

Well, I can't say I would blame for joining Slash and the boys on version for Sweet Child of Mine! In my opinion that is great exposure
