Bridge patches

Ok I started it so weigh in with your experiences using and not using one.

Does a lack of bridge strap give an old school sound? Does a small patch not much bigger then the bridge really effect sound by design or just due to the fact the struts are more flexible from the relief cut into them? Long patch or strut? Does the added lateral stiffness increase volume significantly? Does the added grain crossing really help balance the sound? Position as it relates to the saddle? Bueller? Anybody?
