In Britian, one was always thought of as very cultured and sophisticated to be able to speak French. Funnily enough this didn't apply to German, Spanish or Dutch etc....only French (and possibly Italian). I wonder why?
Maybe because the culture was considered to be very "arty", with the Paris left bank writers, the jazz clubs and the Art Cinema?

Anyway it definitely was the language of choice amongst the upper social classes.

Here is Kenneth Williams' spoof of a fake French song made up of random well-known French words, but attempting to impress, with an exaggerated accent..

Elle est bonne celle-la et en plus il semble parler francais alors on ne peut meme pas parler de lui!
