'Flamenco Tradicional' by Ian Davies

hello All,

I am a flamenco guitarist student, living in a small village in the north of Friesland in the Netherlands. I started to accompagny my wife and daughter (9 years old) during their flamenco dance lessons with my guitar ones a week. My son (8 years old) also plays guitar and helps me to accompagny the Sevillanas dance, he is doing quite well!

I hope, somebody here could help me finding some books from the 'for-me-famous' - English - flamenco guitarist, Ian Davies. He died some years and because his peak / famous period was around the 80/90s not much traces of his music is left.

In the early 90-ies, I had flamenco guitar lessons for some years in Groningen, a nice place in the North here. At that time I bought some books (3 from the 9...) from Ian Davies book serie named ' Flamenco Tradicional' I only bought the first 3. Due to a shoulder injury I stopped playing for some years. Lately, I re-discovered the Davies books, I like them a lot because of its pure / tradicional character. Since this serie is no longer for sale, I have to find the missing volumes via other flamenco guitarists. Two weeks ago Dutch flamenco guitarist helped me out with the 4th volume, which was (more than) great. But he told me as well that the other, higher numbers of this serie, would be more difficult to get. Here in this forum I hope to be among other Ian Davies fans, helping me to find the following missing volumes:

vol 5: Tientos / Malaguenas
vol 6: Buleria en la / Fandangos !
vol 7: Alegrias por medio / Sevillanas 2
vol 8: Farruca / Tarantas
vol 9: Soleares por medio / Peteneras

the publisher was 'Harpocean Limited Ltd', London (which no longer exists :-( ).

I cannot find any trace of the above volumes on the www, it might be the case they missed the internet because they are published in the 80s? It would be really really great to have the serie complete!

By the way, my favorite record (from the 60s/70s?!) is from 'Rafael Romero' named 'Cante Gitano', guitarists: Andres Heredia and Rafael Heredia. For me this record contains the really pure flamenco!

Ian Davies was an English flamenco guitarist who died in 2002 at age 49.

i had one a long time ago, i think it was bulerias, and i don't think i have it anymore, but i was surprised to see some of them in El Mundo Flamenco in London, just search the name and you will find the shop website, phone number, address etc., you can phone them to check if they have anything

I too have the first four volumes. I never realized there were any others. So if you find a source, please post it here.

I to bought Vols Two and Three of Ian Davies,s Flameco Tradicional in the late 80,s and like you I think thier great espeacially for beginners/ intermitiate plyers wanting to push on.The pieces were well thought through, a good listen for a non Flamenco audience, good stand alone pieces for aficionado,s.
The Bulerias espeacially helped me get into this difficult torque and I play the
Verdiales note for note all these years later !
They are crying out for a re-issue.
In the mean time if lapaz or any one else has some more of the old volumes please get in touch , I have a number of old deleted recordings that people might be interested in.All the best Craig

I contacted the London Guitar Studio a few months ago. They appear only to have in stock the first 4 books of the Ian Davies "Flamenco Tradicional" series. So anybody who wants these books/tapes should order them as soon as possible, while they are still available in stock.

From what I have been able to uncover, I believe that Ian never completed his course of 9 books/tapes - which is a great pity - as he was such a fantastic teacher, and somebody who could have done a lot more to promote flamenco guitar teaching, if he had lived.

Ian turned down my offer to produce a book of his "flamenco guitar method" - that was in 1992. I regret the fact that Ian never produced the flamenco guitar method (in English) which would have been the best flamenco tutor ever available. Life never turns out the way we expect, and that is so sad.

Please do not forget the clear and traditional style of teaching that Ian Davies used, when he gave his lessons in London. We are all the poorer if Ian's "method" is not preserved amongst London's flamenco guitar community. I hope that others may come forward and try to re-create the guitar tutor that Ian should have produced. In some ways this is similar to the production of Shakespeare's first folio. I think that Ian Davies was a very special guitarist.

I have contacted Ian’s former partner, Mar Roman, about republishing the books. Her last message to me said, in part:

“I'll have to check that out in Spain as I don't remember if there are extra copies left with me there. It would be nice to get them reissued if there are copies available, but I don't know. I'm planning to go to Spain in May or June so I promise to contact you.”

Si puedo ayudar, lo haré. Un gran guitarrista y una person muy amable. Recuerdo una actuación con su mujer y con Marote, la que fué una maravilla.

I just had a look at that copy and its ok but the manuscript Pdf has every other page printed upside down so you got to sort it out a bit ( I presume it was scanned that way )... but its right //

I was watching retro flamenco videos on youtube the other day. A non spanish sounding name Ian Davies appeared. I was wondering who it was. Then I found some topics on the foro. This is probably the only youtube video showing him play at 49:15.

I only met Ian twice: once in a great concert in the university where he played with Marote, 2 dancers (one Beatriz) and a good singer. I spent the evening watching Marote: impressionante.

After the show, my friend John and I handed out leaflets, announcing the creation of the Peña Flamenca de Irlanda del Norte. To our surprise, this gave a great response, so the Peña was formed.

Then once in London, where I was trying guitars (best was a great luthier guitarra de Vilaplana de Alhambra ), worst a Conde negra. Chatting with Ian, I discovered that he played an Archángel. So I bought nothing

i guess memory of the singer improved with the passing of time, I spotted this while re-reading an old thread from 2013 (assuming it is the same event):
