Yeah Kate, that's for a straight hire though. I'm sure like many theatres/auditoriums they would be prepared to negociate for a percentage of the door takings if they reckoned it might be a good bet. I could only listen to bits of the programme, but apparently they are getting hired by "vanity performers", ie wealthy folk who sing/dance/play a little and have always dreamed of one day playing the Albert Hall. So they pay their money and issue tickets out to all their friends etc! It's a sort of new slant in "vanity" publishing. The management are exploring new ways of bringing in revenue, for instance, by offering amateur choirs etc a chance to sing the "Messiah" etc, with a full orchestra in one of the World's most prestigious venues. If you are part of, say, a 50 strong amateur choir, or a large amateur orchestra, then if everybody chucks in a few hundred quid then you'll have a night to remember. Combine that with a few days stay in London and voila, you have a great package holiday! Quite cool, really. Mind you, some folk just chance their luck and put on a concert there. One poor bugger (a guitarist, I believe), saved up his dough and hired the hall, and only 200 folk turned up! cheers Ron

Hi Ron, well its one way of paying the bills . We could do with that, people who want to make a flamenco record and can pay to do it, helped by all our local flamencos doing palmas etc. we could do a fine job, and the proceeds could help us release records of the poor yet talented unknown flamencos who never had the chance to record. We're almost ready with our flamenco record label, just waiting to hear from Madrid and have all the paperwork in order to register with the SGAE. We've already got Emilio Maya and his wonderful album ' Temple' already and are just about to sign up Juan Angel ' El Tirado' and Rafalín Habichuela, so hopefully we'll have two more albums in our repertoire. Juan Angel already made a CD for Pasarela, he got 2% but never saw a penny. We offered 25%, big difference and with our system he'll see the profits from day one. Once when Harold was on the road with Juan Angel and other flamencos to do a show in malaga they stopped at a petrol station where harold saw Juan Angel's CD for sale. He was so excited and went to buy it but Juan Angel would not let him, said it wasn't worth it. What a crying shame. So anyone here wants to make a great flamenco disc feel free to get in touch, and by doing so you'll be helping out the whole flamenco scene as well as having an amazing experience and a CD to show for it Saludos kate

Yeah Kate, I can see you've been inspired by the beauty and simplicity of the idea! Why not? Many recording studios are financed, not by major recording stars, but by amateur bands wanting to make a "demo" album, (which is in reality a "vanity" album...yeah?) To be surrounded by expensive studio equipment and get familiar with studio jargon and have an experienced sound engineer make minute adjustments to get just the right sound. It's being pampered! And everybody loves that! Lot's of folk go to exotic foreign locations at a great cost, just for that kind of experience, though it usually involves hang-gliding or exploring caves LOL! I think this idea of the Albert Hall's has great repercussions on what an entertainment experience can be for those who can afford it. To perhaps go to Granada, cut a couple of tracks with an experienced sound engineer with state of the art equipment while being backed by some of the most experienced Flamencos on the planet. Meanwhile, taking time out and enjoying the sun and el sabor de Andalucia for a week or two? I can tell your mind will be working overtime tonight on this! LOL! But, sure Kate.... it really is a wonderful idea! cheers Ron

Usually Harold does not like vanity sessions, we have someone trying to do this at the moment, a would be pop singer, willing to pay as well and goodness knows we need the money, but when he calls Harold just keeps saying he's busy, which he is, and he doesn't care we are broke. However I think H would be happy to do this for flamenco, particularly guitarists and Emilio has offered to be artistic director for anyone wanting to do this. I'm going to put a cultural holiday section in my new improved website which I am designing. I just got signed up for a 3 month course in web design which is great for me as its a free course. I'm also offering accomodation in the house of Jaime Heredía 'El Parrón' the flamenco singer, father of Marina who lives next door with her bullfighter husband el Chicote. Its an amazing opportunity for anyone interested in flamenco. Last night at the Peña ( went to see Lole Montoya, Harol did sound for her) I met Jaime's current guest an American guitar student who just kept saying how lucky he had been, falling over flamenco everywhere, which of course is what happens when you stay with someone like Jaime. Now to really advertise this I should start a thread called flamenco holidays or somthing on the guest page to let everyone else know about it. Thanks for the idea Ron. You'll have to come out here yourself one of these days. Saludos Kate
