Didn't know what title to give it...

I see here many people having the abillity to play different palos.
It's something I would like to in the end, but I noticed I have a big favour por siguiriyas.

Tangos, Bulerias, Fandangos are palos that I try to get something in my fingers because its nice to play when people are around, but when on my own its always getting back to Sigiruiyas (Solea and Granaina, but less.)
As I am a couch player, just for my own, I am pretty satisfied with that. But when you are a performer you have to have some palos available to entertain.

Is this recognizable for some of you, to have a favourite palo to play for yourselves?
Would it be strange to focus on just one palo and still feel flamenco?

A big shout out loud to anyone who's capable of playin different palos!!!

... if you are not professional..its not important what you play. So..play what you like. If it is just 1 palo.. so be it. Its not strange at all... Many spaniards also only sing fandango and nothing else. And they are in TV.. ^^

If you play for dance..you learn most palos automatically... Theres no way around..so its not a big deal. The palos are just different rhythms with varying chord progressions.. Its not rocket science. It is always only so difficult as you make it yourself. Every plao can be played with easy stuff and...there are also difficult ways to play em.. If you cant...play easy stuff. Most of the traditional stuff is easy and sounds great. You can easily learn a small solo that satisfy yourself with easy old flasetas for each palo. Just grab a Juan Martin book..and you are set with some nice solos.

Im also couch guitarist... I played a lot for dance in past...but now..almost not. I only miss it for rasguado practice.. But thats it. Now I only practice what I like every now and then..

Lets see what the flamenco-police has to say to that.

LOL!
Nice approach Doit!
Although I'd rather grab Norman's falsetta collections and combine it with compas strums rather than Juan Martin

So you changed also due to change in setting, what are your naturally favourites now?
Maybe I a wrong but to me it seems people have a natural tendacy towards a certain palo (mood) if it isn't for entertainment.

BTW are you going to the flamenco bienale in the Netherlands?

I am afraid of the police already ...."What!!!!!? You should be able to play everything "

WHAT!!!!!? YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY EVERYTHING!!!

Just kidding. No stinkin' badges here.

Seriously though, if you're not a professional, why not just play what you enjoy. Just so long as you don't get bored with the same one or two palos all the time. I would suggest that if you want to limit it to that, then A) learn and/or create many new falsetas within the palo, and as a corollary, B) try not to play set pieces, which will sooner or later bore you to death.

By avoiding set pieces, and by playing falsetas at random, it will always be fresh and interesting, as you will never play it the same way twice.

Ramon

Just play what you want to play

But instead of being on the coach, go out and play with others! At least me, it motivates me to learn other palos, as well as techniques

Don't limit yourself, there are alot things can be learned from flamenco, but at the same time, play what you want to play. Key word: challenge yourself

The flamenco police say that germans should NOT be sitting in a couch when playing flamenco. """""" ungeheur slecht.

I have moments where I like one palo and others where I like other palos. Siguiriyas are often my favorite. But right now its not what turns me on. Solea is always good. Bulerias... most of the time. I have my ups and downs with Tangos and alegrias and I´ve just had a columbianas period. I guess its just like life itself.

Its fine, so long as the palo is not something like peteneras.

As guitarists get more involved playing with others in flamenco, accompanying or juerga, for baile etc, it is natural to end up with lots and lots of bulerias to work on, or at least gravitating towards that palo vs others. The rhythm is the thing about it and vast majority of guitarists seem to get flack for spending too much time on bulerias. But it is ok too. Diego del Gastor was no exception. Guitarists from jerez it should be obvious but they still get flack for having more then 2 buleria on a recording.

Pepe Martinez said in Rito y Geografia that solea siguiriya and buleria are our "daily bread" in flamenco, yet the art form has so much more to offer. He played a lot of ida y vuelta stuff. I would see a problem with someone focusing too much on the lighter weight fringe stuff, but for the daily bread stuff it is perfectly ok.

sorry but very bad adviced here imo.

some of them too relaxed.

as if a mama is talking to her son: you can do whatever you want my son, i will always love you.

you can play on your couch and have a favourite palo, but you should learn all important palos.

also those free palos.

enjoyment of all of them comes later (if not already). guarantied.

your taste will change from one palo to another (the more you spend time with the palo) and finally will include many of them, if not all of them.

you could skip Zorongo, but learn the rest man.

you are young and motivated, but maybe just too lazy.

learning and practicing is not always enjoyable. sometimes its just boring work.

don't waiste the time and energy which you already used until now for flamenco, by excluding some important palos, just because your favourite actual palo is something else.

Thanks guys for all the replies!

Its good to see people are likewise, and that environment encourages to put more energy in one than another.
Maybe its good to get outside again and find some people to play along with.

Ofcourse its not my intention to neglect the other palos, but its just to easy to fall back on something that's familiar.
I might be a bit lazy yes ....we need more sun overhere!

Hahaha, couch-playing was not that literally...still can't sit on the couch because my immedialty let me know to sit straight.
I use a pussy-footstool now while sitting on a cajon...it feels better than the "hide-your-balls" position

Im no pro or anything, but i could live with only buleria and solea. And one "free palo", doesnt matter wich one. The most amazing compositions for me have been written in those palos, not fandangos, seguiriyas, or whatever. But your official statement should always be that you love all palos as long as there is cante and you hate solo guitar.
