Philadelphians? Anyone remember Loc... 

Anyone out there remember a shop in Philly called Locker's? Back in the 1960's or 1950's? 21 South 18th Street? I just purchased a geriatric flamenco and the only obvious identifier is an old white label inside {Locker's in Philadelphia - Importers of World Famous Guitars and Lutes - Model:"Cordoba" ~ Spain No. 1A}

Oddly enough, I grew up not far from Philly in that era and the name Locker's is vaguely familiar to me from that long ago. I've searched the internet without success. I'm other coast now, with no musical contacts back east anymore. Just curious if anyone has any ideas about who they imported for. It is a well made old flamenco that was reasonably well cared for and maintained, spruce and cypress.

Interesting. But it looks like 18th street on the label? I lived on S. 11th St. in Philly for a year.

In 1967 I had Lockers ship me a blanca to Austin, Texas on approval. It was a pretty nice guitar. In the end I didn't approve because my wife bought me the '67 Ramirez 1a blanca I still have--my next-to-favorite flamenca.

Yes, 18th st, I corrected that, thank you! I appreciate all and any info. I am lousy at appraising instruments, I only know what feels good and evocative to play and what makes my heart glad to hear- have to trust others on the assessments of where/when/how much. One luthier believes that it was more of a shop effort than an individual luthier's product, but says it is still quite well constructed. It will be 2 weeks or so before I can post better pics of it, but I will then. Maybe photos will strike a chord with someone. Still would love to know if Locker's had a relationship with specific shop/shops in Spain.

If it is a blanca hold it up to a strong light in a dark room and see if you can see through the label and tell if the Lockers label is pasted over another label.

I'm well satisfied with my '82 Arcangel Fernandez blanca. It's been a long time since I played Jerry Lobdill's '73 Reyes, but I prefer the Arcangel to my memory of the Reyes. The Arcangel has a firmer pulsacion, less buzz and a more solid tone. I'm also pretty sure Jerry would prefer the Reyes to the Arcangel. Just personal preference.

After it opened up, I liked Dave Senechalle's '73 Conde media luna better than the Ramirez.

If I run into one of your Reyes models, I'll certainly look forward to trying it out.

I built several models of Jerry's 76 Reyes guitar which were OK but not the same as the model I'm building now. Call Harry for lunch some day and check it out. He is a heck of a nice guy, and is owner of Trinity Films. He and wife had a baby girl and are still trying to adjust :-)

The last documentary I saw of his was "Ride Around The World," about different cowboy cultures world wide, at the Imax theaters.

Jerry's guitar had a thick top and smaller harmonic braces going across the top at the sound-hole. The 2003 model I copied has a thinner top and stiffer bracing. This makes for a stronger guitar with more volume. But I haven't heard it since it has opened up with Harry's playing, on occasion.

Yeah, the thin tops need extra bracing to protect the top's stability, as a norm.

This current flamenco negra going to Savage guitars, if I can ever get finished with it, has a thin top and a low bridge saddle configuration that keeps things stable.

So far so good. One more order for a Miguel Rodriguez classical style and I'll be through with building orders for awhile.

I'll try and do some experimenting on a 1934 Santos flamenco style to make more volume and better articulation in the modern styles. I think that will be a fun project.

Sydney Locker was a special person to me as I bought a cheap Conde from him and sold a few guitars for him, including one "51 Marcello Barbero with a replaced top, which looked as if it was replaced by another maker. But the guitar was a fine one. Most of his sales revolved around cheap 90 dollar Condes in those days. He also did a business with guitars from Mexico.

Sydney actually offered me a job in the mid 70's repairing guitars for him but the cold weather was not to my liking, so the money gain was not worth me leaving San Antonio.

Thank you for the info, Tom. I have a buzz out to the Philly Classical Guitar Society to see if anyone might have specific info on importing who remembers or may have worked w/ Sydney. Not trying to make a princess out of a washerwoman, just curious if I can figure out any more about this old blanca. Inexpensive 60's Conde may make sense. Real value is in what is evoked for me, anyway. Thank you for taking a moment to help me out.

i also have a cordoba spain guitar the number is 01. can anybody with any info of the guitar please help me out? i have just got it and im trying to figure how much they are worth or anything like that. any help would be appreciated.

There is a fellow named Michael Menkevich who knew Locker and may have worked with him

He lived/s in Elkins Park, PA and the last Phone # I have is 215-635-0694
