New flamenco video lessons . . .

I'm still getting these video lessons emailed to me (obviously in the hope that I'll part with my hard-earned and sign up for the DVDs) so I thought I'd share them with you all. There has been three weeks worth, but they're all on the latest offering anyway. Who knows, perhaps they'll change the way we all play . . . .

The author does let slip that his tame teacher is called Mehran, so I Googled the name and came up with very little indeed. When I coupled it with 'flamenco,' however, I got a load of hits, not all of them complimentary. Apparently, (if he's the same one) he's Persian, has an album called 'Angels of Persepolis' and teaches flamenco in Chicago. Samples of the album are available on Amazon, and an independent review is here:

Not my personal taste in flamenco; it sounds over-produced to me. May be someone's cup of tea though?

The thing I sort of find in these Flamenco lessons from those who have learned Flamenco as a "foreigner", is that there is one helluva lot of TALKING!

The Encuentro or Spanish produced stuff seems to just get on with the demos.

I find them very "Now let's put down your electric guitar for a moment kids and let's look at a whole different way of playing guitar...yes sir!"

"Now..this here thing I have in my hand, is called a "nylon" string guitar, or "Spanish" guitar and it can be recognized easily, because if you look closely you can see it has two sets of 3 machine heads on either side of the headstock instead of six in a row like most electric guitars and uses thicker strings (made of nylon) unlike the acoustic Country & Western "Jumbo" guitars you are probably used to seeing people playing in a pub or on TV... "

(Camera closeup on headstock and strings...)

"OK guys.. now let's see how we play one of these things..."

Sorta like watching paint dry...

I've been there a couple of times on holiday and liked it very much.

Hi Ron,

I have to agree with you; that's not my preferred way of learning. I'm a big fan of Terry Fleming on YouTube; as you say he just gets on with it and then explains it later in terms I can understand. I think my playing has come on a lot since I started following his lessons - I also like the fact that he's not above making mistakes . . . If I ever get to be half as good as him I'll be very pleased with myself. My French has improved lately, too . . . ;-)

I'm halfway between Chester and Rhyl - not the prettiest spot in North Wales I'm afraid. I am, however, 10 minutes drive from an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which you can't see off the A55 expressway. From the mountains there you can see as far as Snowdonia 35 miles away! Whereabouts in North Wales did you get to?

As you can see from my profile, I'm a trucker and used to have a job which involved driving from just outside Chester to Jedburgh every day. There's some beautiful scenery in the Borders and it's only 4 and a bit hours' drive from here. I used to get around the Glasgow/M8 /Edinburgh area a lot too (and beyond . . . way beyond!) with a car transporter about 12 years ago. I like Scotland lots!

For beginners there is enough good material already available.. I don´t see the need for more amateur teachers. I mean we have this british guitarist for that... This.. John Martin... Or Juan Martin..

My first time in Wales was in a canal boat from Chester to Llanollen and the second time we based ourselves in Rhyl and got a train pass to travel all along the North coast and through Snowdonia down to Porthmadog.

Great! I loved it.

I liked how most people just spoke Welsh in the pubs and didn't give a toss..

(I also liked how the Town Council in Chester had the gumption to fly the Cross of St.George outside the Town Hall instead of the usual Union Jack like the other PC savvy English towns..)

Hey, Cymro,

Glad to run into someone else who watches Terry Fleming. I think his compas often goes off, but some of his musical ideas are interesting and why not just do covers in compas?

Do you have any opinion about his picado technique, though, where each plucking finger has to touch two strings except when playing the sixth (low E) string?
