guess as time goes on i really dont get the whole rock thing... guess it was my introduction to the guitar but when first exposed to the mclaughlin, di meola, de lucia in my teens...[i'm now 48]...abandoned that world fairly quickly..never went back... if it was'nt for my 15 year old shredding son i would be very oblivious to what was happening rock wise... dont feel nostalgic about zeppelin..etc..in fact kind of hear it as pretty sloppy and derivative of earlier blues and celtic styles...just louder and drunker... ...alot of the stuff my 15 year old plays is alot more precise in terms of articulation and feel...more humour too! frank zappa summed it up in his 'history of rock guitar [which i cant find on the net...but appeared in a 80's guitar player magazine] 'once there was this white middle class kid who got hold of an early BB King record, got his mum and dad to him buy a new electric guitar...a year later he had copped the BB licks but played them faster and louder, borrowed his mums blouse and went out there, scored a gig with his mates and became a guitar legend...FIVE years on another white kid from the burbs copped this kids licks but played them faster and with two amplifiers...borrowed his mums blouse and headscarf and became a rock legend...Five years later...think you get the rest.... dont want to be too dismissive as there are some awesome innovaters along the way, just most seems steeped in mediocrity..mass produced fodder without much personality the jazz world is much different.... Flamenco and south american guitar are my happy place...
