RE: You age versus how easy it is to... (in reply to Escribano

I tend to find warped amusement in the little mundane absurdities of life.

Like every week I go to the supermarket and sometimes by sheer bad luck I arrive at the time when the Geriatrics are in on their wheelchairs and those big electric mobile chair things, bumping into the back of your legs and running over your foot, or blocking the aisles while they take half an hour to choose a flipping can of soup.
Or six of them decide to have a conversation in an aisle and just ignore you when you try to get past.

I think there is a special bus that goes round the sheltered housing areas and brings them there.

The supermarket has the trollies chained up outside and you have to insert a pound coin to release one..and you get the pound back when you insert the keychain thing in again once you're finished. (just in case you might prefer to throw it into the nearest canal or river I guess.. )

Last week I was walking up from the car when I noticed this old granny shuffling along at about 0.1mph towards the trolley park with her empty trolley.
She looked like she was in her 80's, wearing a floral dress which looked like it had been made out of the bedroom curtains and was made-up like Barbara Cartland, with a half inch layer of face powder and bright red smeared lipstick ...like she'd just had a makeover by her favourite Undertakers for a wake.

I said "Here...I'll save you a trip", and handed her a pound coin.
She took the coin, but continued on her way...
I said "No...I've given you the pound, so I'll take your trolley..".
"But I want my pound coin back." she said.
"But I've already given you a pound." I said..."so you give me the trolley".
"You can have it after I get my pound back." she said.

"OK", I sighed.."give me my pound back and I'll get another trolley."
She looked at me accusingly and said "Why do I have to give you a pound?"

"Oh God", I thought...."Why did I get involved...."

So I accompanied her at 0.1mph until we reached the trolley park.
She fiddled with the lock but couldn't work it.
"Can you get my pound back for me?" she said.
So I clicked in the lock and retrieved the pound.
I held it in my hand and said "Right...you give me my pound back and I'll give you this one...OK".
"Why have I got to give you a pound?" she said in an agitated voice..."Give me my pound coin!"

Just then a helper or somebody arrived and I explained what had happened.

"Edith", she said.."You give the man his pound back and he'll give you yours."

"But why have I got to give him a pound?"..she repeated.

Eventually the helper managed to prise the pound coin out of her ancient clenched fist and handed it to me and I handed her mine...Phew!

Jeezus...it was like the world of Monty Python.

It's only in retrospect that I can laugh at the absurdity of the whole thing..

Doit would have had a nervous breakdown!

cheers,

Ron
