Manuel Reyes Guitar - Anyone Interested?

Last year while in Cordoba I visited with Manuel Reyes and Son and in the process put my name on the list for a guitar. At the time they told me it would be 3 years waiting list. Well, as the world economy has affected us all, I guess they have had some cancellations of orders, and they notified me that they have a Guitar ready if I am interested. Unfortunately I am not quite financially ready to do this and will put my name back in the list, but thought if there was someone on this forum who wanted a shortcut to obtaining one of these splendid guitars, I could arrange for a substitution, otherwise they will offer it to the next person in the list.
It is a Flemenco guitar with Cedar top and Cypress Back and sides. Price is 7800 Euros plus shipping.
This would be a guitar made by Manuel Reyes Jr as the father stopped taking order long ago. If anyone is interested let me know soon.
Than ks
Liam

I've got too many personal guitars already, but for anyone who can afford that one, I would only say that I have heard Manuel Reyes Hijo guitars, and they sound utterly fantastic – every bit as good as his father's. And there are also some clips on YouTube of Grisha playing one. I think that anyone currently in the market for a flamenco guitar whose budget can manage it could not do better for that price, or for any price for that matter.

I was on Manuel Reyes Sr. waiting list for ten years back when, and like you, when my time finally came I didn't have enough to pay for it. But to get one of these with no wait is a rare occurrence.

You are right, these guitars are absolute masterpieces. If you have been in their workshop, they never have more than 3 guitars going at once, and dont seem to be in any hurry to finish them, Hijo had 2 going at the time and Sr had one.
If I had the money I would buy it just to resell at a profit.
Ron, I am with you, but I was thinking Monopoly money.

By the way, if anyone is in the market for an extremely well Spanish made guitar, check out my friends at www.hermanospena.es
They are Paco Pena's nephews, and he introduced me to them last year in Cordoba. Not that being related to Paco makes you a good Luthier, but Carlos and Jaime are very talented and of course having your uncle's input doesnt hurt either. I ended up buying one of their Guitars, in fact the photo of Paco playing one is the guitar that I bought on his recommendation. The quality is superb and they will be honest about the quality of the wood they use. Of course the Concert models have better wood than the student models but the workmanship is outstanding on both. They are of course based on Gerundino for obvious reasons and I am extremely happy with mine. It still smells like a wood workshop.
We are going to be bringing some of these into the USA but if you live in Europe, check them out. If youre in the US, let me know what you are looking for.

Hi Liam,

How would this work in terms of trying it out (the Reyes)... in situations like this, where you have been on a list.

When your name comes up to the top of the list, what happens if the guitar has dodgy intonation or something ? Do you get to try it out, and then possibly reject it, get put on the list and wait for another. Or just lose your deposit ?

And would the same courtesy be granted to the person you are substituting in for yourself ? Or would the luthier just insist that you take it 'as is', or else the next person on the list would willingly accept it.

Of course, with something like a Reyes, at that price, it should be almost perfect, but... gotta ask these questions.

Manuel Reyes - Sr. or Hijo, doesn't know how to make bad guitars, or guitars with "dodgy" intonation, whatever that means. When you buy a Reyes guitar you just buy it - there's nothing to think about.

Hi
In terms of trying it out, you would probably have to go to Cordoba, Which is a pleasure if you are able. Prominent Critic is correct though, Reyes makes guitars according to time tested processes and Bad Intonation caused by inferior wood, workmanship or misunderstanding of measurements etc is not a factor. All guitars are made by hand (not a power tool to be seen in the shop) and only by the 2 of them, there are no apprentices like the Madrid shops where you have to make sure which address it comes from etc.
Their price is fixed no matter what type of guitar they build. By the way they do not take deposits either, to them its simple, if you dont want it someone else will take it.
Although its a sizable investment, its an investment nonetheless.
Let me know if you are interested. I will have to let them know pretty soon that I cannot take it at this time.
Liam
