Public Conned Regarding Performance ...
One reason there is so much ignorance in the general population regarding flamenco can be found in the notice listing the upcoming July 2 and 3 performance of the Gypsy Kings at Wolf Trap Park for the Performing Arts, here in the Washington, DC area. It notes that they will perform their "Worldwide hit Bamboleo and other fiery flamenco tunes." Bamboleo???!!! Flamenco tunes???!!! Perhaps it should read "toons."
Now, I have no problem with the Gypsy Kings. They are fine guitarists, singers, and performers. But there will be many in the audience those two evenings who will leave thinking they have just attended a flamenco performance. Perhaps it is too much to say they were swindled. And they probably wouldn't care anyway. They will have enjoyed the performance. But it will have perpetuated a myth regarding what flamenco is all about: If it sounds Spanish, it must be flamenco.

How many of the people who think like that would enjoy a flamenco performance, if they knew what true flamenco is? Only few i would argue. Heck, go to a normal flamenco concert and look how many of the people are just casually interested. Flamenco is a niche genre, accept it. But yes, the mislabeling is still annoying.

If these fiery flamenco tunes are included, then whats your problem ?
Please re-read the performance notice above regarding "Bamboleo and other fiery flamenco tunes." What palo does Bamboleo fall in? What palo do most of the Gypsy Kings' arrangements fall in? That is my problem.

i know, no worries i was a bid kidding (not entirely though!)
its just that we had quite a few fakemenco threads recently, so i thought let's change the rules of the game and see what happens, otherwise it would be the same discussion again.
anyway, for me personally it would be cool if gypsy kings would just play ONE bulerias (or other palo) and the rest rumba. thats a good compromise, so audience would be like "what was that? bulerias? what is bulerias?".... that would be enough for me personally....
but anyway, i have to admit, i kind of still like gypsy kings (unlike ottmar, etc.)

I agree totally, Arash. I, too, like the Gypsy Kings for what they are, a form of "Spanishized" (If that is a word) pop music. A sort of "Abba" of the Spanish music world. I also agree with your opinion of Ottmar.

that bulerias in B was a bit disappointing, coz on the album they recorded a multi guitar bulerias with drums which sounds killer, with abanico rasgeados and all that. This performance was just boring, the same rhythm all the way. I prefer them over Ottmar any day, but because of other performances, not this one. Not to speak of this piezo pickup sound. I dont mind them playing Rumbas all day long, they are good at it, if they got rid of these pickups.

I like Flamenco like I like Dave Brubek, Chick Corea, and Django Reinhardt. I like the Gipsy Kings like I like Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas. The former is much more cerebral but sometimes the latter kinda makes you feel good too.

yeah, but gypsy kings audience don't really know the difference between a perfectly miced pro. flamenco guitar and a yamaha with piezo pickups either , so who cares......and i bet tonino hated that sound himself in that bulerias vid, but he is playing for "gypsy kings audience" and not at home for himself (and its much more safe, feedback problems, etc. clear sound, with that pickup )
deniz, don't assume that 1 million denizes or arashs are sitting there
also notice that he doesn't always sit, so he can place a mic infront of his guitar. therefore that guitar belt. he mostly stands there, like the others (thats probably the most important reason why he uses pickup)
