super fast bulerias

I was practicing away using Jasons Doctor Compas and I started cranking the bpm while playing bulerias. I was able to play fine still at 260 bpm, compas only though. My alzapua still felt good at that speed and I figured why not practice like this for a while and then drop back down to 220.

Wow, 220 felt soo slow and I was able to play so much better at that speed. I think Ill start doing this as practice as it seems to make sense.

Do other people do this? Whats the fastest anyone has ever played bulerias comas and still have it sound good??

Vic

Hi Vic,

It's a good idea. The main thing is to vary the metronome speed. I knew some Rock players back in the post Van Halen days that were obsessed with speed but forgot to practice at slower speeds and they always fluffed their lines at lower speeds because they practiced all the time at the super fast speeds.

I would think that practicing faster than necessary would make the normal playing speed sound tighter and more uniform.

actually sometimes its harder for me to play the same bulerias slower than faster
(compas + falsetas).

i make more mistakes and even sometimes not exactly in compas while playing the same
thing very slow.

Like try to make a video to teach something very slow, you will have more problems,
than actually play it with high speed.

weird

Bulerias was used to play faster in previous times, also the strumming was more straight and less ornamented. Well, above a certain speed there is not much time for adding tricks i guess. I dont like it as it sounds like the player has an important date thus just wants to finish the performance quick. And as i said it is limiting musically. But anyway if you want to find alot of fast buleriasses i would start searching in the old days!

Yeah it is a lot harder to play slowly, especially bulerias. I really likie playing fast alzapua and find that it helps alot when I have to play slowly. Im going to keep playing around with the speed and see what happens.
