PDL playing fretless guitar?

I have been told that the "oud" section in PDL's Almoraima, which I previously thought was PDL playing an oud, is actually him playing a fretless Andalucian guitar. Apparently Santos Hernandez made some fretless guitars ...

Anybody know what is actually played in the Almoraima track? Anybody ever played one of these?

Your previous thinking was correct. PDL is playing l'Oud on that track.

The only reference I can find to PDL playing a fretless guitar on that album comes from a video posted by wait for it......prof. Ruben Diaz. PDL certainly DID NOT play an "andalucian guitar" on that album or any other. He was 28 years old when he recorded Almoraima. You may judge the accuracy of the profs´ information ( and horrible sounding guitar) for yourself.

If Santos Hernandez ever did make a fretless guitar, it was surely experimental. Every Santos I have seen has been fretted.

Thanks, Marcos.

Diaz's guitar really does sound horrible, doesn't it? For a guitar, I mean. It actually does sound a lot like an Oud, though.

I really can't blame Diaz for sounding bad on a fretless guitar. I think it would be really hard for anyone to sound good on one of those, even a Santos Hernandez. I know Diaz is reputed to be a PDL specialist, but I don't know much about him. Does he post on the foro? Your quote (above) sounded like you have had some experience with him.

If you google "fretless andalucian guitar Hernandez" you will get a bunch of hits, some for someone selling one. The page wasn't clear on whether it is an actual Santos Hernandez, or if it was someone's "Santos Hernandez Model" of a fretless guitar. It was selling for only about $5500, as I remember, so probably wasn't a real SH, which should sell for a lot more. Especially something as rare as a fretless should be.

Rather than repeat a lot of bad stuff and start another fight on the forum I will refer you to some links. Prof. Ruben Diaz was a foro member who got banned from the forum in record breaking time and subsequent threads about him or Andalucian guitars have been banned or locked. I dont want to bring up another thread but as a way of explanation I should say that its not an actual Santos Hernandez for sale but a "Santos Hernandez model" made by Andalusian guitars. $5500 is widely regarded to be a hugely over inflated price for these guitars.

You can buy a real Oud easily enough for a couple of hundred Euros though.

For more info about Andalusian guitars you can check out these lengthy (and locked) threads

http://www.foroflamenco.com/fb.asp?m=127726&key=andalusian%2Cguitars

That's as much help as I can give you on this subject without breaking forum rules and it would be a good idea to stick more to the subject of Almoraima and less on the subject of Prof. Diaz for the rest of this thread.

Almoraima

New to this forum. I don't know if second hand accounts of a first hand account are acceptable. But from a friend, Carlos Lomas, el Chipi, who was hanging out around the time of the Almoraima recording and is an oud player who had just released an album, Chocolate, playing oud and flamenco guitar about 6 months before the recording and release of Almoraima. Carlos and Tomatito were hanging out (Tomatito also plays on Chocolate), Cameron came by to get the Arabic tuning from Carlos for Paco. It was a rather cheap oud, Egyptian Carlos thinks but is not certain. Paco did not use the rishi (plectrum) but rather played with his fingers picato. Tuning c-g-d-a-g-d. This was the standard arabic tuning. Before this Paco had tried to tune it up to guitar pitch. Not so good on the oud.
Never heard or saw a Santos fretless.
a different Keith (didn't plan to be Lignum as a username but I have been called worse)
