Setup for CG171SF?

Hello,
I just picked up a new Yamaha CG171SF at my local GC (made in China - old stock maybe?). Is it worth trying to get someone to setup a guitar as cheap as this? I measured the action at 3mm (12th fret) which seems high by the other posts I've read on here.

As a newbie I'm wondering if I should just play it for a year or two until I can gain some ability or is it worth swapping the saddle, tuners etc...

Thanks!
Michael

Anders considers 3mm and 2.5mm to be standard.

The only mod I made to mine was to swap the plastic saddle for bone. Someone else did the saddle and nut but it seem unnecessary to do the nut if I capo it frequently.

Thanks - it didn't occur to me to measure both sides. Treble side is a hair over 2mm (as best as my poor eyesite can tell). Sounds like it's already in an acceptable range so I guess I'll quite worrying about it and just play for a while.

Since it looks like you own this model, what strings do you find to be the best fit?

Thanks,
Michael

Hey there mate. The general consenseus is about 3mm on the 12th fret.
It's good enough to practice on, but if you are able to score with a good flamenco guitar during this time I don't see why not.
After I got my yamaha, I was able to buy a Anders for a fair price so I got it. About 2 months back I was again able to get a great negra at a good price again, so I got that as well, I'm a beginner but if you can do it, why not. Keep an eye out at the classifieds, there's heaps of guitars there.

Seems like the price gap to go from the cheap Yamaha to a decent guitar is pretty high and gems are hard to find on eBay. I've seen the postings on eBay for the inexpensive Navarro's, but I just don't know if I trust the authenticity or quality of those "special edition" models.

I'd go with either Savarez Alliance 540R (all normal tension) or 540ARJ (hard tension basses with normal tension trebles). They're more expensive but their bright tone really works well with the CG171SF.

I'd start with the 540R first. They'll do fine. I get mine from StringsByMail.com.
