I have changed machine tuners and want to fill the old screw holes.
At the moment one screw isn't in because the original hole is very close to where the new one needs to be. I imagine it will just splinter if I try to make a new hole.
Any suggestions appreciated, is standard wood filler ok?

I've used toothpicks trimmed to fit, then superglued in place with superglue for wood. Then shaved them off flush with an exacto knife. Then redrill the holes for the new tuners. This works well for me, and is simple and fast.

the round toothpicks work great--and they are free at many restaurants. if you do not have a toothpick, a sliver of hardwood works. i prefer wood glue over superglue but we all have our favorite glue. n85ae put you on the right track

Here's the suggestion I received from LMI, almost word for word the same answer, so now I know what to do.
"Instead of wood filler, use a toothpick to fill it with a drop of super glue. I make my own toothpick from the same wood in the same grain direction and glue it in. A straight edge razor blade works to cut off the excess."
This worked well and is easy. I used a regular tooth pick. I suggest masking tape when you use the stanley blade to cut of excess tooth pick so you don't scratch the finish

Most of the time the toothpick trick is fine. If I need a new hole near the old one I would not trust drilling into endgrain and expecting a tiny drill bit to go straight. Rather than bother with any wood, I would fill with epo.
