I have a question for those who have attended this festival in the past, particularly concerning the 'trasnoches' flamencas in which a juerga usually takes place. Any one have an opinion on this unique coming together of the foreigners with some of the Jerez locals?

It was my first visit, so "not knowing better" is understandable. Can you advise on a more genuine experience for next time, or should one just give up and join the queue with the Japanese?
Hey Simon when you are learning something like you and me it is better to seek out experience and learn discrimination from your own musical intelligence. The experiences in the peña la guardia varied in quality but that does not mean that it was not a worthwhile experience. We heard some great stuff there too.

I was fortunate enough to meet Simon and meet Emma again in Jerez. The night when Baruulo sang every palo he knew, accompanied by his 14 year old son was great flamenco. I live in Andalucia and I have participated in many "real" juergas where there were no foreigners. What happened in Jerez was real. I hope to go again.
Thanks Sean that was a memorable night and no could could say it wasn't a valuable experience for someone aspiring to learn about cante and the acompaniment of it.
By the way everyone the purpose of my original post was to recruit anyone (well not anyone ) interested in getting a pad together. Robin suggested I could crash at his place again but I don't want to get in people's way if it is a popular venue this year. I would be interested in a flatshare too.
