Alegrias for Dance class!

the teacher has written down the order and amount of compases/llamada/silencio etc so i can come up with something but im not that good with terminology when it comes to alegrias!

Whats a subida in alegrias? or a campanas? I probably know how to play em but dont know these words!

Subida is where the tempo speeds up at the end of the paseo.

I believe the campanas is an alternative term for the silencio. Someone told me that it's because the beginning of the traditional silencio sounds like bells. Um.... well it doesn't really, but that's the story

I was asked to play in an alegrias class beginning this week on friday. I said yes..but they told me there will be a guitarplayer who is pretty unexperienced. I told them that its no problem and he can play together with me.. I hope his fingers are experienced with rasguados.. the theory can be learnt faster.

Whats up with you Stu? Are your rasguados feeling good? If you dont know the terminology..just follow the feet. And in every Alegrias is usually the silencio and at the end a bulerias. I would prepeare a traditional silencio before they ask for it. Now is the time Stu! If you dont know what this is or you need an easy one, I would be happy to help you out with that.

i have to learn how to do that. it's sometimes called bulerias de cadiz, right?

Yes,... I think so.. Well,.. definitely a bulerias..

De Cadiz.. yes I think so but Im not sure about the name ... when I play it, its called bulerias de cojones.

The bulerias start after a subida, llamada into the bulerias. Usually with a standard chord progression.. A little bit boring. So,.. if the dances dont want the traditional one in particular..I like to play it differently. But often the footing fits perfectly on the traditional singing...then the guitarpart is pretty strict... And that makes it boring because I hate it to get reduced to a cassette-player.

I would call it footing. Footing and fingering. In fact i like it more than footwork. I will use footing from now on.

loads!!! ... but honestly I think its just some weird nerves about playing Alegrias for them... dunno why I got em....I just wanna play something close to music shes choreographed the dance to!

quote:

Are your rasguados feeling good?

yeah they're feeling strong and clean and flowing, infact they're the most pleasing part of my technique at the moment.

Technically I feel strong....It's just something blocking my confidence. It's the material!!!!

this is what shes written out for me from the cd they've been using.

1 compas intro
5 compas
1 compas llamada
7 compas (song)
1 compas llamada

Silencio
- 1/2 compas
- 1 compas
- 1/2 compas
- 3 compas

1 compas subida
1 compas llamada
3 compas (last one song)
3 compas subida into llamada

for example the "song" part......... what do I play?? which chords at what point??? is 7 compases usual length for song??

I can't even ask the questions i want answered!!!!! its frustrating me.

when i play 5 compases...do i just play Emaj-b7 over and over???
its the variations I want...

Like i said...if i could get that cd, id feel happy........... but im also pretty sure i dont really need it...its just a safety net or something!! arghhhhh

English is weird.

Stu thats a very sharp plan she gave you.. ^^ I guess she has already a choeography in stock that she used in past. Than she maybe has some records..audio, video.. Or a CD-track that works for her dance. I would ask her, than you can arrange your own stuff more easily.

The the letra I would guess she wants the standard one. But there are different standard ones with different length.... Just wait for her dance and count through. Maybe she can sing it..than it sould be no prob.

Maybe someone can write you the chords down. I know how to play but I dont know the names of the majority of the chords..so. for that.. Im sure somebody else will help you here.

Oh shes writing out for you? I was just told "play something". Seriously. But anyways, it would be good for you to check the cante. It gives you the chords. You wont need more than E,H7,E7,A,F#m in the beginning, but it really depends on what music the dance is based on. If she gave you a CD it should be no problem, no?

An Emaj-b7 ? ROFL.
No just play E, or if you must, E9 or E6 as substitutes.
It is really not half complicated as it looks right now, although im still learning too of course.

The reason for that is,..in english there is a b instead of an h. (H is right man! Mozart used H not B!)

You can count the whole silencio as half compases... Maybe another weird way of dancers to count.

well for the song part, which i'm assuming is the letras you can play
-0--2--2--0
-0--2--2--0
-1--4--2--2
-2--3--2--1
-2--2--4--2
-0--4--2--2

there's a ton of variations you can do on that. i listen to what they're doing with their feet for ideas on the rhythm. they're doing an alegrias in the bata de cola class so i'm going through the same thing you are basically.

RE: Alegrias for Dance class! (in reply to Stu

hey stu congratulations mate !!

you will be fine amigo...dont even stress too much about the cante chords if theres no singer and u have alot to remember, just do typical chords......i am assuming this is for class ?

and later on u dont need to know how many compases of everything lol thats acctualy harder...just tell her to teach you the signs for the llamada (sometimes 2 steps) back and pay attention to the changes ask her to do each change a few times and find something about what she does before to memorize it...

thats gonna be eazyer then trying to keep track of 8 compases once playing ...plus they dont always go according to plan...and if they go one compas shorter its gonna screw up your whole thing ...

but really dont stress and the thing is...even if u miss a llamada and play a straight rithm while they do a llamada...it wont go out..just increase volume when u notice its a llamada and stop with them ...no big deal

the most important thing to remember for you is the stops...silencio

the rest should gell togheder eazely
