Glad you made it though. I didnt touch my guitar since one week also because of health reasons. Never did that for such a long time in the last years or so. I dont play hours a day, some days i dont play at all, but not for one week. Anyway this taught me to f***ing take care of my health.

I've never heard of this happening to a finger used for fretting. Was the nail long enough to touch the fb? Get well soon--I hope it works out for you.

i would suggest spending some serious time exploring what areas of playing guitar, you find to be fun and rewarding, and make sure you make time outside of your practice to have fun and enjoy the instrunent

but mainly, practice practice practice,

instead of listening to the gaps between you and your teacher, maybe try recording yoursellf playing a piece you find difficult in the morning, then practice that piece all day, be strict on yourself, practice when you dont feel like it anyore (nice comfortable room will help this) at the end of the day record the piece again, and listen to teh improvement

this excersice should show the the progress you can make in just one day

Well, I don't easily give up even though most might think I should have long ago. But often you give up just on the cusp of getting better.

One example: I got to the point of starting and enjoying a conversational German class, and I all of the sudden stopped going soon afterwards! Not because it was hard, which it was, but for some other reason, and I can't remember what it was. I often wonder how things would be if I kept at it.

So that lesson has helped me stick to the guitar. Yes, indeed I think I am starting to turn the corner on my guitar playing just now after f***ing years of glacial and limited progress and all kinds of problems, like breaking my hand twice. Please excuse my language.

Maybe my lesson is instructive for HuBaghdadi...

just a quick note to add to what others have said..
I think the problem is you are comparing yourself to your teacher..
last year I was like, man my teacher is great and I'm totally ****..
and someone asked me, how long have you been learning I said 6 mths.. and how long has my teacher been learning? I said 20 years..

yep... big difference.. so don't compare yourself to your teacher..
just compare yourself to yourself..say 3 mths ago, or 6 mths ago..
I've been only learning for about 10-11 months cuz I stopped at the end of last year.. but I compare myself to myself when I started in Jan 09 and I have improved HEAPS.. .

so compare yourself to yourself, if you are improving (no matter how little) it's good =)

If it's true that you are reaching an important crossroads, then that fork in the crossroads might be the act of getting rid of your guitar teacher.

Although you seem to be self critical, I'd wager a bet that your teacher is not helping your state of mind - sounds like he is beating you up in a mild but unhealthy way.

I went through a couple of guitar teachers, both having completely different approaches, before I hit my third (and best) teacher who knows that teaching is not only about being a brilliant player, but about knowing his student, and knowing how to press the right buttons to keep them motivated. Students are different too, and good teachers know that. It's ALL about the student.

It should also be the case that you are being given the chance to make 'easy wins'.. small lumps of easily practiceable and achieveable work, which makes you feel that you are winning every week.

The old truth of 'Is it working for you?'.

Given that the answer to this is a big fat NO, you can either change yourself (you're trying, it's not working), ask your teacher to become wiser and teach you better (might not go down too well), or change your teacher.

You might find it helpful to start uploading stuff here for criticism.. all you need is a simple webcam, and you'll always get at least 3 or 4 people opinions.

Having done that a few times, you might get a feel of what useful things a 'good' teacher might say, and then be in a position to know how to choose a teacher for yourself (either where you are, over this magical interwebby thing).

The point being: you work out how to vet and choose teachers so that they suit your personality. And then you finally feel like you're making progress.

totally I agree, after near 20 years of various styles , i put the metronome on and play E to B7 /F# it sound like cool, as it was in time!! lol .

only took near 20 year, point is early days just enjoy , learning Lag
lagrima is hard on the LH after 1st year, concepts of ligado and stuff etc,

id say after 1st year , listen tap along with the recordings/sing , strum, do what every just relax with it, and follow the great advice thes dudes have said, keept the guitar always around , im like ron (i just cant play), but ive put it down and then u pick it up its like wow this is cool, its the best Instrument !

Good to see you back among us Adam. Sorry to hear about your health issues though. As I get older (I'm 56 now) I notice that I get sore joints in my hands/fingers when I practice alot and need more time between practice sessions to recuperate.
I hope you continue to listen to flamenco. I try to listen to CD's every day and tap along to work on my sense of compas even if I am unable to practice the guitar...
