Amping it up!

Hola fellow flamencos,
Could anyone give me some ideas on the proper sound equipment to use for dance accompanyment? I have talked to a few people at some of the local music stores and I seem to get different answers; use an acoustic amp or use a PA system. Mostly I get a glazed look when I explain that we are playing Flamenco and need the dancers to be able to hear us and no, I don't need a stack of Marshalls! I say we, because its myself and another guitarist. We are starting to play a few gig's and we just can't hear ourselves plus the dancers can't either. Our instruments would have to be mic'd as neither instrument has a pick up.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone has suggestions...

I remember a thread recently on this subject but I wasn't able to find much with the search function.

I thank you in advance for your help, its greatly appreciated!

i think i made the other thread.

anyways, i use a cheap mic into a preamp into a keyboard amp. it works fine and sounds okay except the room i'm in is really ringy and the feedback is deathly.

boston guitarist juanito pascual uses a crate limo with a clip on mic and it sounds AWESOME. no feedback, accurate sound, loud, sweet reverb.

I too just use a small keyboard amp--mine has two line inputs plus an XLR, so it's pretty versatile.

After doing another search in the Recording Advice section I found more info on mic'ing and amping a nylon string guitar. Thanks guys for the response and ideas, I really appreciate it...!

I use a Roland Micro Cube set on "mic" mode, with a Shure 57 microphone.
A special mic-plug to guitar-plug cable is necessary.

For the more visually inclined:

Please note- this setup is great for dance class with up to 4 or 5 dancers, but it wont be loud enough to be used from a stage.

hmmm another question.. are all clip on mics the same?
or are there special ones that flamenco guitarists uses?
Jason recently posted 2 videos of his last performance and he uses a clip on mic as well i think.. but the sound is GREAT!

I use an Audio Technica clip on condenser mic ( with preamp built in) into a Crate acoustic guitar amp.
Always sounds good, never had feedback issues. But I haven't used that setup for dance accomp. I play with another guitarist and 3 dancers max so we usually do fine acoustic.

i just bo0ught a rode m3, they are a nice price, and this mic works beautifully, florian has borrowed it off the previous owner for gigs, and it worked just fine. if you have the money however sennheiser make some really amazing mic's that are being used by a couple of local players

Roland AC-60 is a good and cheap alternative to AER Compact 60 .
i own one and its really good.

when i was testing these 2 amps in the shop and compared them, i almost heard no difference in sound quality.

My two cents.

Aer compact Mobile [like carrying around a car battery] used aer for years but the roland is a good alternative, cheaper too...

Sennhieser K6 microphone...

or for rowdy audiences an Audio Technica Pro 70 clip on...

but truly love the sennhieser

The best amplifier in preserving the original guitar tone i have heard is SR technologies, or something. The godin people endorse these amplifiers.
I have played with one and it was AWESOME! Made you think it was Tomatito playing - not you. But the price was high from the local dealer, so while not a prof. myself, i decided not to buy.
