Flamenco scene in Bristol

Hi all,

I´m moving back to the Bristol area soon after a year in Granada, does anyone know of
any flamenco activity happening in this corner of the Uk, I know there´s a flamenco teacher at the Spanish guitar centre but is there anything else out there?

Hi Taffy

Ask Chris at the Spanish guitar center for more info. I asked exactly the same question when I was in the shop a few weeks back.

Yes, there is reputedly a healthy scene in Bristol. As well as the guy who teaches via the centre, there are two players who gig regularly in the city who are meant to be very good, plus baile and shows happening in the city too. Obviously nowhere near what you are used to, but for the UK it sounded pretty healthy.

When you get into it all, could you post some stuff here?

Jon

PS - 'Taffy'? Are you from Wales originally?

Hi Jon,

Thanks for replying and yes you´ve guessed that I am originally from Wales, Tredegar originally though I lived in Cardiff for 15 years prior to timing out in Granada, I see from your site that we have this in common.

As much as we are fond of the homeland, my family and I don´t really want to backtrack at the moment, we found Cardiff a bit arid culturally (well if you don´t count rugby as culture!), so thought Bristol or thereabouts to be a better bet, I think your post confirms this but if I find out more I will definitely let you know, whereabouts are you based if you don´t mind me asking?, have you sold the Sanchis Carpio yet and found your dream guitar?

Hi Taffy

Bridgend boy myself , I now live in Plymouth. I lived in Bristol for four years too.

My brother lives in Cardiff - its changed quite a lot you know, quite a vibrant city these days. No idea about the flamenco scene though.

I still have the Sanchis, but I'm saving for a better guitar. I shall probably hang on to it for a while as it seems to record quite well.

At some point when I have more time, maybe in a year or two, I intend to study flamenco properly with some teachers and Bristol is probably going to be the nearest place for me, hence my interest in what's going on there.

So what were you doing in Granada? Did you take lessons over there? I am assuming you are a guitarist?

Cheers

Jon

Hi Taffy,

Thought I'd own up to my Welsh roots too. My folks are from Cardiff, though like you I also live in Granada. I was back in Cardiff only a few weeks ago and tehre is quiute a lively scene there ( though not sure about flamenco) these days. Some time ago the flamenco artists Emilio Maya and Ana Calí performed at the chapter Arts Centre and I am trying to get them another gig there, so I get the excuse to visit my parents I've also got lots of cousins and friends in Bristol who just love living there. if you find anything about the flamenco scene there please let us know.

If you are around Granada this weekend Emilio Maya is playing Sat in La Venta del gallo and also Sunday in Eshavira to launch his new CD.

Saludos
Kate

Sorry if this seems a bit late in the day, but I haven't visited the forum in a while.

I live in Bristol and don't think the flamenco scene's as vibrant as Jon seems to suggest. Maybe I don't know the right people or maybe my finger isn't on the pulse, but there only seems to be the occasional thing going on. What there is is usually pretty good tho'.

However, if you want to hook up when you get to Bristol to trade knowledge/ideas let me know.

Hi Taffy.

Nice to hear you're back. I'm still based in Brighton, and make it up london quite a bit these days so I know that scene fairly well, if I'm ever over you're way I'll let you know.

By the way those last two guest posts were from me - I am properly registered now. Patience not my strong point. Something to do with the passionate spirit that makes me a Flamenco fan maybe :)

Welcome Cloudy, you will find that this is a forum leaning heavily to the flamenco guitar but I am interested in all aspects of flamenco, as are many here.

Hope you find some answers to the Bristol flamenco scene and don't forget the International Flamenco Festival coming up in Jerez at the end of the month.

Thanks for the welcome :)

Where's Jerez? sounds Spanish to me...

Will be good to have a place keep track of Flamenco events and get an incentive to go see them, I don't (yet) have any friends that are into this but the way Flamenco music and dance makes me feel deserves I make more of an effort regardless.

One of the major centres of flamenco. It's in Andalucia. Direct flights from Stansted.

If you are into dance specifically, you might also try our friend Jim Morris's forum at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flamencodancer/

Try contacting a guitarist named Cuffy. Also, if you're back by the 5th of March, he's giving a guitar workshop in Stroud. (Intermediate) There's also a singing wokshop that day - and a beginners dance workshop with yours truly plus a flamenco performance in the evening. Let me know if you want contact details for this event. Karenanne

RE: Flamenco scene in Plymouth? (in reply to Taffy de Lucia

Hi,

Wondering if you know of any flamenco teachers in the Plymouth area? Have a wedding in Jerez mid October and know that dancing is a must!

Do you mean guitar or dance teacher?
Jon Boyes (see first post here) plays for a professional (Spanish) Flamenco dancer in Plymouth.
Don't know how much you will learn in 6 weeks though.

cheers

Ron
