In my opinion Oscar Herrero and Juan Martín are the best for starters.

You can't learn the compas from books unfortunately. You need to learn by hearing them and playing them with others. It is not typical to have even good scores that represent all the nuances of just the compas well.

Try norman's site, lots of good short audio clips that help you understand.

There is a nice little book called understanding flamenco by Faustino Nunez. The book comes with a CD which is a good start at understanding compas, plays different palo and counts the tempo and adds palmas.

After that you just need to listen a lot and try to join in with Palmas or guitar.

i think the books by Gerhard Graf-Martínez and the the Encuentro on Merengue de Córdoba are pretty good too for a beginner...

IMO the best way to learn flamenco is to start off with very simple compas strumming of the most basic palos. Then you add ALOT of listening to flamenco with singing (cante), but not solo guitar. After that, it might be useful to learn a falseta or two by a book (like Juan Martin - Graf Martinez etc).
I wish i had learned this way...
If you can also fit in some dancing lessons it would be even better!

(ah and no books)
