Jason demoing a new 7 string Stephen...

My friend Stephen Faulk let me take this guitar home for a couple of days. I made a video showing it off a little bit. I'm not so sure about the idea of 7 string guitar in flamenco, but I had a lot of fun playing the instrument.... Here is a link to the video...

Stephen's website is http://www.SFguitars.net

He is also great at repairs and restoration.

hehehe the part where you get close to the camera saying you like the "fancy" back and trying to do it in a polite video voice lol

kind of reminds me of a "happy" sales man in a clothes store..."- Uhh its really fancy...i love that "...jk!..i am sorry i have the sense of humor of a 10 year old

thats excellent if you can get a 6 string guitar that sounds and reacts like that ..wow, i want one

btw...u dont mention the order of the strings in the video...whats the 7th string ?

I wish you'd make a studio recording before you give it back.

The camera mic isnt doing it justice. I can tell its a killer guitar, so i'd really
like to hear it through some nice mics.

Love that solea. Nice job working the low string in there.

Those basses are indeed amazing.

The 7th string is a B.... Stephen has a similar sense of humor.... Stephen is going to do a great 6 string for me no doubts. He has been building for a long time. He's just starting to throw his hat into the ring. Now that I have given the guitar back to him.... I miss her and her low B string. I am going to order a 7 string too. Maybe just too experiment with at home. Its a fun guitar.

It took some time to get used to that extra string. I know in my head where to go and what the possibilities are, but the fingers are slow to get the message. I started getting some interesting ideas...... and then Stephen showed up to take her away and clean her up for delivery to her owner......

Todd,

Its an Oktava MK-012 modded by Michael Jolly, 5 feet from the guitar not the video camera , but I didn't run it through the good converters..... just the line in on my G5. Thats where the weakness lies....and The preamp is just a lowly Behringer 4 Channel Xenyx Mixer that didn't help it too much either. Thats my video setup though. I have to keep the video and serious studio stuff separate or it drives me crazy when I record people.

Actually, i may be an idiot, because im listening on my laptop, so it could
be a studio recording, and im just not hearing it because of my crappy laptop speakers.
Sorry if i was wrong about the recording!!

Your no idiot.....It was a safe assumption considering the audio quality of a lot of the vids I have made over the years. I just started using slightly better audio for the vids this year.....

I hear you about the 7 string and flamenco, but still, i dont know, i could
imagine a killer Rondena on that 7 string.

You are the man that could do that and make friggin unbelievable.

You should consider it. It hasnt been done. You could be "the guy" who
pioneers something like that.

Now you only need to grow a sixth finger on your left hand to take full advantage of the extra string...

That guitar does have a striking sound.

How is the balance of the guitar? The oversized headstock doesn't make it too heavy for flamenco?

Its not too heavy, but certainly heavier than a well made blanca. I think its very well balanced for a new guitar. That intense bass response cleans up quick and doesn't clutter up the soundscape. It sort of like the way a good upright bass has a warm, round yet quick attack and the the sustained note is subdued a bit.... in one word... punchy.

Hi Jason,

That's the bit I liked myself.
A great solid Bass sound but more percussive than twangy.

(I love the 4, 5, and 6 strings on the guitar played open or "near open"

The whole guitar seemed great from the general sound to the appearance too.

I bet if you gave Diego del Morao that guitar, you wouldn't get it back off him!

Especially on his open tuning stuff.

Great video J.

cheers,

Ron

Jason,
Thank you for taking the new axe for spin. It sounds really good, nice solea and I did also like I like the B major graniaina stuff you played. The low B string goes wild in B major.

When you get your seven string, after I make your six string, I'm gonna hold you to playing some Bach. You will shred baroque music with a seven string. I really like when string flamenco players go for baroque music especially Bach. I bet there's some passage from one of the cello suites you could make in to bulerias section. Te cello suites after all are based on dance music forms.

One of the things that really killed me about your playing is when you went off that day and improvised on 'Round Midnight por buleria. You need to record that dude.

As for me having the humor of a ten year old, I'll own that, but don't tell anyone.

Doood your on the Foro... cool.

Here is a version of Thelonius Monk's "Round Midnight" that I recorded 6 years ago and was never finished. Its an accompaniment for a Spanish translation vocal that a friend (flamenco singer) was working on and we just got too busy and forgot about it. Its in 6 and is somewhere between a Solea por Bulerias and a Jaleos kind of tempo as opposed to the slow 4/4 ballad that is how it is typically done. I get around to playing a little of the melody around 2:34..... it was intended to be a scratch track to place the vocal and then I was going to rerecord it to fit the final vocal performance....

I used to play a lot of Villa-Lobos and a little Jorge Morel too. 20 years ago......

When it became clear to me what kind of investment was going to be necessary to learn flamenco, I put that stuff down.....

Wow, did you use any compression on the audio from that 7 string vid, or is it really that punchy? that is just superb! so clean and clear too, no muddy rumble stuff. Excellent!

No compression.... It sounds like it, but thats just a mic 5 feet away going into the mixer and into the computer.

The guitar is exceptional. Stephen Faulk is onto something unique. Lets see how he does on the next couple of guitars. If he can reproduce THAT effect with different types of woods etc.... I have the feeling that he can... if so he is going to be a busy luthier.

Jason,

Your version of "Round Midnight" is awesome. Didn't know you had such good jazz "chops".

Ever do anything with Django's Nuages?

The Italian guy is great, but he doesn't do much rasgueado and when he does its very polite. Nice falsetas though.

Okay Stephen I need a Flamenco Theorbo. I have to have more strings than any one else.
