Bulerias compas 

Hi everybody, Its been a few years since Ive posted...been busy practicing! Ive been working a lot on bulerias compas lately and saw a video on youtube where a guy shows how a llamada works and goes from A to b flat on beat 4, and not 3. Is this right? I actually have no idea how a llamada works, so an explanation would be great, but is there ever a situation where you change to b flat on 4?

Hi Vic,

I don't know if this is what you mean, but some people change the counting pattern because it seems more logical to them to start on 1 instead of 12. In that case, the B flat would fall on beat 4. So instead of

12-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11

it'd be

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12

BTW, I recommend NOT using that second pattern to learn compás.

There's another idea that might be what you're referring to. It's usually four chords strummed over 12 beats:

D minor (1-2-3)
C (4-5-6)
B flat (7-8-9)
A (10-11-12)

You can change the D minor for an F chord or another B flat chord, and you can substitute G minor for B flat, etc. but the B flat wouldn't normally fall on beat 4.

Without seeing the video, it's hard to say what you're referring to. In any case, I'd recommend being careful about using Internet material, because there's a lot of confusion out there. You'll know the good stuff when you see it (Ricardo and Jason, for example), but there are a lot of videos made by beginners who really don't know what they're doing yet. IMO, if you can't take lessons with an experienced player, you'd be better off studying artists' recordings on your own and using Internet material as a supplement or a key to understanding. It's like the difference between food and vitamins.

Thanks Norman. Sorry for the late reply. Yeah i see that there are a lot of people that are on youtube giving advice...the only thing that I didn't understand was the llamada part.

dancers say llamada is used to call a singer...(but then that theory goes to hell when they also do one in the midlle of his letra) eg. bulerias


so to keep it simple and unassuming think of it as a change in rithm so its distinguished from typical buleria rithm(or whatever palo u are playing) ..so whomever...singer, guitarist know that the dancer is either calling the singer on to sing a letra or they going to change rithm or section or speed...so llamada = change

think of it as an accent on every beat...dosent have to be but its the first simplest way to think about it 123 456 78 910

once u internalize it u can play around with it and get creative

regardless of the strumming..again to keep it simple..it has to stand out clear from what u have just been doing

there are no set rules as long as far as the chords used ..most common is to stay on the A for the first compas of llamada and change cords in the part romerito is describing..
...most important thing is the timing and the obvious and clear change in rithm,...minimum 123 has to be really strong

i wouldnt try to guess what someone is doing from chords..expecially in bulerias...so if hes missing the 12 and doing 123 most likely is the first part of the llamada

lol i just tought of another possibility

if u arent aware of the llamada counting and started counting it on 12 i can see how u would end up thinking that the 3 is a 4

just to be safe..apologies if u allready know this, just wanna eliminate the posibillity

llamada starts on 1 and ends on 10

Thanks Florian and Romerito. I wont lie and say I get it now, but I guess I have an idea of what to look for now! Im going to try and upload some bulerias ryhtm soon to get some feedback. Thanks for the help.
