nut slotting...

Hi Gents,

What gauge of nut file do you guys use for slotting a nut for normal tension strings?

Cheers

Peter

I use a different file for each string depending on the thickness of the strings.
Some makers use fine saws for this job.

Little Steve...great to here from you - things are...well...going...

I hope I'm not sat here in a field in Carlisle with hoof rot while you are enjoying another month of Andalucian sunshine?

Kevin - thanks for the reply...hopefully the following will explain without you thinking that I'm a tightarse!!!!

I currently cut the guides for the slots with a jeweller's saw then use a variety of files to try and neatly widen the slots - this is where I can't get the same quality and smoothness in finish as when I made the guitar with Steven (Hill).

I've looked at getting a set of nut files as Kevin suggested but a whole set is expensive and seems to be geared towards a steel string set-up - i.e. guages from .16 - .56 (from Davd Dyke supplies - as good as any suppler I have found).

I don't have any measuring tools with me at present, only a couple of guitars to judge by eye (a Hill blanca and a Conde blanca) but I think the whole set of files maybe wasteful based upon observation (no-way is that E string .16)?

Cheers - off to annoy the sheep with another poor bulerias

Peter

i am enjoying another month andalucian sunshine! how did you know!
you only need one, three cornered file for the job really. something quite fine. i use a three cornered needle file from axminster was about a fiver i think stephen uses a large three cornered file. but has the same effect.

I use a 50´ for the 6th string, a 42´for the 3rd and 5th, a 35´ for the second and fourth and a saw for the first.

You can do with a 3 corner file, but the final result is better (IMO) if you use special files.
