Funny thing .. this morning I was looking at some elk bone that I had picked up in the field last hunting season .. said to self; self, time to cut this up and see if it's any good.

Found this info a couple of years ago.
http://www.bearmeadow.com/build/materials/html/bone-clean.html

There are some people that temper the bone with heat to increase the hardness .. if my memory is correct (most often not), it is approximately 200 F. for 1 - 2 hours.

Make friends with an elk hunter -or- better yet, go elk hunting.

Jim

Hi,

I dont know how to prepare a bone for use in instruments but I wanted to thank jstelzer for the link.

Two years ago a luther gave me a bone that has all the fat still in it, he said I could use this just as well. Now I think I will get another one, just to be sure.

Thanks Jim.

Rob.
