Visiting Andalucia

Hi all,

Hope this finds you well. I'll be visiting Andalucia in June with two of my friends. Not only are we flamenco fanatics, but we're also immensely interested in the surrounding land and culture. We want to avoid the major tourist hubs (e.g., Malaga), but we are largely ignorant of the smaller towns that encapsulate the Andalucian heritage and culture.

If anyone has any pointers they can share on which towns/villages to visit, which flamenco cafes to frequent, etc., I'd be greatly appreciative. Any other tourist information would be great, too. We're flying from Toronto to Rome to Sardinia, and then finally to Andalucia.

June is a very nice period, and I think you should go to some of the Andalucian cities like Granada, Sevilla and Cordoba and simply ask around.

Here in Huelva, June is a bit dead, the courses are ending and the two major festivals are in July, so maybe someone else can help you out some more.

This is a good link to find out specific concerts. May and June schedule already up.

You could start out in Madrid and see Farruquito or Carmen Linares. and get down to Cordoba for Tomatito with Diego Cigala or Sevilla for Esperanza Fernandez.

By the way Malaga is not really a tourist hub people just fly into the airport and go to the coast. The best way to avoid tourists is to avoid the coast as well as all major cities but then you would also end up avoiding flamenco as well

Malaga has a fantastic flamenco festival but dont think it is happening this year. The Granada Music festival is on in June/July but all good flamenco like Marina Heredía performing the Abbey on top of the Sacromonte is already sold out.

I agree with Anders, depending on how much time you have, Granada, Sevilla and Cordoba are all a must see. Jerez and Cadiz are veritable hubs of flamenco and would be on my list.

Many thanks for your informative posts; the link was particularly helpful. If anything else comes to mind, please do share.

In addition to the main Andalucian cities (Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada) were thinking of the following places as potential places to visit. We'll obviously have to cut the list down so that we can manage in the 8-9 days we have in Andalucia. Feel free to comment / advise.

Zahara de la sierra is absolutley my favorate pueblo en Spain. Its not in any way a flamenco town . It simply one of the most beautiful places in Andalucia and the food comes from the nayional park. Go to the town square and enjoy wild boar, roast deer, stuffed partirdge and the incredible views of the eagles circling the lake.....

of the rest of the list I advise el torcal and utrera as must visits. Antequera is nice but not spectacular. There are much better castles than lanjaron. Ronda is definately worth a look though. the bullring and gorge are both incredible and the tapas is to die for.
