A different point of view on passion versus self-discipline

steve pavlina's articles are great!
results also lead to increased passion. and passion definitely helps you maintain discipline.

but i wonder if working with only discipline and no passion is healthy. isn't he all about working on your passion? what's the point of doing something if you're miserable doing it?

LOL, no disrespect, but reading all the titles of the books and its amusing contents, i can barely hold my laughing. The idea of writing a book myself is suddenly flashing, if i will have the time and money for it. Possible titles would be: "How to become smart" undertitle: "For smart people". Next book: "How to become smart 2" undertitle: "For stupid people"

Or: "Good" undertitle: "If you read this everything will be good"

Sorry, but imo all this is false, pseudo-scientific (meaning it creates the deception of scientific methods, but the applying is wrong) and the only thing it will cause/be usefull for is that somebody is going to make money of this.
There is an idiom in germany for that, and thats "dangerous half-truths".

I got that impression, too. In any case, what he says in the linked page hardly applies to art.

As Florian admonished me when -in my very first post- I sought advice in order to properly label my compositions, Music is only the chosen vehicle to express oneself, not the end-result. The danger is to allow “form” to supersede “substance”; when we allow such unnatural process, what we had to say loses its meaning to a tediously rehearsed scripted speech.

Through Discipline or Passion, a musician says what he needs to say, the artistic revolution we all share will find a way to express itself, by inventing a surprising falseta to weave into one’s rigidly calcified repertory or by changing the metronome.

Your guitar should allow you to say things you are unable to express otherwise. So let it speak for you. The opposite would deprive it and you of its magic.

well any idea can be dangerous. especially NEW ideas. i'd say 99% of new ideas are thought of as crazy first. ie. how long did it take people to accept that the world was round? obviously, a bunch of stuff out there IS bullcrap but how will you find gold if you dont dig through a bunch of worthless rocks first?

people used to get killed for having different ideas! now the worst thing that can happen to you is a disapproving message in a comment box online. lol.

there's different paths to the same truth. there's a lot of people teaching personal growth using different methods. the smart people can pick what works for them and what doesn't. the smart people also know that to achieve different results, different actions or beliefs are needed, new actions or beliefs. or else you get nowhere. i guess maybe that's why he named his site something cheesy like, "personal development for smart people?" lol.

anyways, it's about the desired results/effects, the "what." the "how" is not so important, within reason.

hmmm I've attached some pictures of where I practice my guitar.. it's a place called bronte beach in sydney..
maybe you can find somewhere where you feel really REALLY relaxed and then without the stress of 'needing to play' you can really play for the fun of music...
I met some really cute german girls while practicing there..

cheers

Ha,
it seems that Steve Pavlina is a well known persons around gitarists .

The spirit seems to be back again!!! A lot comments make sence, and as somebody mailed me "I set the goal to be playing well when I am 65..."....it takes the pressure of and makes room for some fun again.

Also spoke with my teacher...he was first shocked, he finded that I was doin well and therefore increased the difficulty quite a lot....I don't know what it means, but I was doin things for Level8....so we agreed to go way back down to level1/2....
Pfffff, so now I'm learning a easy tientos and that go's very well....now its also fun again just to play and find the right mood for the song....

From a physical point of view, I am now taking Ca/Mg tablets, which are very good for the nerve system, and so as it seems, and really does, does relax the fingers a lot...

So if someone makes cold hard cash with his or her advice it can't be useful for some? Can't see the logic in that.

Anyway in the answers to Kozz's question I missed the idea of 1% inspiration and 99% transpiration.

Of course if you feel miserable doing something then it is definitely not going to work to pressure yourself into more misery.

But hey whatever works for you! Different strokes for different folks yada yada yada

Oh and another reason to kick yourself in the butt to at least play a little bit: It keeps your finger muscles supple and your callous fingertips in shape. I find it hell to play after days of not playing, everything starts to hurt in minutes.

Holy Evil, your practice-place makes me envious! beautiful place
newstringjunkie, your new avatar is really nice

..and what about improvisation? this can also give you new inspiration.
i haven't enough energy to learn new pieces in the moment, so i try to work with free palos. i take a simple taranta progression (Bm / A / G / F# for example) and i try to play an arpeggio over this, or finding alterations for the chords, or improvising an easy tremolo part, and i mix it with scale-fragments, and sometimes inspiration comes after a few minutes, sometimes it takes longer but i learn to play more relaxed this way and i have more fun, but that's just one way among others.

No, not any idea can be dangerous. The thesis that the earth is no disc, is opposed to the content whats written in such books like "Success - How to get success" or "Big - How to get big" or "Good - How to get good", not wrong. The reason why its called "half-truth", is because it gleams a sort of knowledge, opposed to obvious bullcrap. If you want to look for gold, i would leave the worthless rocks aside. Unless you are Sisyphus...

I could write such books, you could write such books, and even people who THINK they need such books, could write them. Its based around fears and hopes, mixed in with some very general statements about life and world. Im not saying its evil. Im just saying its time wasting. If you want to get smart, hitting your head with a baseball bat could be equally effective, due to increasing blood circulation in the brain. Sounds like a new idea, no?

So doin a lot of golpes increases blood to the hands and therefore will be good for the fingers???

I think any idea which suites you will fit. Maybe a year later it won't anymore because of personal growth.
Some ideas are harder to feel comfartable with than others, but thinking about it an making a decission is worth the benefit. At one point one will recognize an idea that fits that specific situation.

Makes sence to me NSJ (north sea jazz???), especially when you're new to something. It's part of the deal

nd i try to play an arpeggio over this,

That's what I like also....and its fun....
