News from the workshop: 2A model

Hi everyone

Some publicity. I hope you dont mind.

I have collected wood for a 2A (segunda or second) model.

It´ll be made with some woods that I have decided is not good enough to be called 1A. Its all well sawn and well aged and acoustically there shouldnt be any difference. It will be standard size with a 650mm scale and a 52mm nut width and I´m not making it as an order, but you can always inquire if I have one at home. The price will be 2000,-euros with a case. This one is sold but I will make some more soon.

Thanks for the heads up. I was meaning to ask if you'd have me on a notification list for your 2f guitars. The brute reality of my situation is that It'll take a while for me to save up money for a guitar, but It's nice to follow your work.. and seeing pictures like these makes it easier to save.

Hey Anders, good news. Nice Guitar.
Would you please exactly describe what the differences are? (to your normal Model). Is it only the wood you choose and Rosette and everything else is like your 1A Model? or are there also other differences, things like tuners, the work you do, etc.? Thanks.

Hi thanks for the replys.

There´s basically 2 differences between my 1A and my 2A

1) They are not orders. I built when I feel like and I do what I feel like. No special woods, no special size etc. Just like if you bought a Bernal or a Sanchiz.

2) esthetics. The wood is not as high quality esthetically, the rosette is simpler. The tuners are cheaper (but the rubners on this one work VERY well) no extra purflings and no hanky panky. Just a plain good 100% Luthier made guitar.

I try to make all my guitars the best sounding and playing I have ever made. If not I think its bad energy and a waste of time. I use the same bracing and plantilla etc. Sometimes a 2A will be a test guitar. Lacquer, bracing, soundport or whatever I´m up to.

Hi Anders,
I like the look of the rosette, really nice even though simple as you mentioned. Now if the euro would just come down a bit... As you know I don't play flamenco, but I played an old Conde in Minneapolis about a year ago that was great, so easy to play. I'm still looking and still trying to improve my playing.

Anders: Speaking of Canadian cypress I presume you are referring to Alaskan yellow cedar? I played a classical with that for back and sides along with spruce that I liked. Really what I think I am looking for in a guitar is a strong midrange. I played one "flamenco" that was basically set up like a classical with normal action for a classical and it had that kind of punchiness in the midrange that is so appealing.

Hi Sherman

CDN Cypress/ Alaskan yellow cedar is the same thing. I like its sound quality.

Flamenco Blancas normally have a stronger midrange than anything else. Thats why they are percussive and work well with rythmical music as flamenco.
You can build a blanca classical and it will the same quality but it would be better to build it with a bit more tension in the top and a slightly heavyer bridge. I made one like that with a cedar top and a soundport a few month ago and it came out very nicely. Fast and light with a strong body and very beautifull trebles:

The Euro-dollar exchange rate. Well its where its been for the most of the time since we hanged to euros 7 years ago. around 1,25$ to a euro. I would also like it to come down a bit, but its beyond what I can do.

That sounds awesome, Anders.

If I was having a hand-built flamenco I'd have to go for pegs, I think, but I can't imagine that a 1A sounds much better than that. Does it?

The guitar sounds great. I like the playing as well. I'm just starting to learn tangos in the past few weeks so it's need to hear it played well on a nice guitar.

As with many others on here, I'm looking forward to the day when I can afford one of your creations.

The eventual difference in sound is theoretical. A master grade soundboard should theoretically sound better, but I find that if the weight/stifness relation is good the soundboard will work well.
Very often grading depends a lot on esthetics. And this particular soundboard is esthetically a 2A. But the weight/stifness relation is absolutely top notch and it has silking all over the board. So it works very well and is very vibrant.
But on a 1A guitar, everything has to be 1A (in my opinion) Thats why I make 2A guitars because I have woods like this which acoustically is very good, but esthetically it doesnt qualify for a 1A.

Nez.
Good idea to learn Tangos. There´s a lot of basic tecnique to learn in tangos. Be patient and dont worry about the guitar. I have a feeling that they have already cut the wood for your guitar and that its only waiting to be assembled.

Anders,

This is a very interesting development, and that’s a gorgeous guitar. I actually like the idea of a simpler, more “humble” looking, workhorse guitar that has all the sound and playability of a primera over a perfect, precious guitar that I’d be afraid to touch. And there’s a bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing element there too…..

Do you think you’ll ever build any of these with pegs, or does that add too much labor-expense to the equation?

The 2A is thought to be a spruce top blanca 650mm scale 52mm nut....
and thats it..... This because I would like to make some 1A guitars as well and thus there has to be a difference.

BUT life is the way it is. I will build a 2A with a soundport now and it´ll most probably be THE only 2A with a soundport, I will also build a 2A negra because I have some rosewood which I dont think is worthy for a 1A etc, so maybe one day I´ll build a peghead 2A.... Who said that rules were to be followed? In the end it all depends on the market and this I accept. I have to and its not really a problem for me. As long as I can survive and have a decent life making guitars, I´m a happy man.

Well, I love the idea, and I hope it works out well for you. And I’m definitely interested, personally. How are you planning to unload these suckers, list them here first-come-first serve, set up a 2A notification list, or just have people inquire on their own?

My guitar is an estudio, and I’ve really grown accustomed to all the little flaws and flares in the wood grain. They’re kind of like beauty marks. I think a beautifully flawless set of woods might be kind of weird to me!

By the way, I watched Guitarrero again over the weekend. Is your perro Danish or Spanish?
