Rosette Designs
If this has been covered before, then, could someone kindly direct me to the thread - but I was just wondering *where* the individual designs for the rosette around the soundhole come from?
I find them intriguing, and some very beautiful - so this started me thinking whether they have some deep symbolism, roots in Arabic art and culture, connections to family/ local heraldic emblems, or are just individual guitarreros' own creations?

All of the above. Like the headstock, the rosette is also a place where the luthier can distinguish himself with his own design. Although many luthiers use pre-made rosettes to save time, many still choose to create their own designs using mosaic tiles. Some luthiers also use solid pieces of figured wood instead of the mosaic tiles. Take a look at Anders Eliasson's rosettes. I prefer this style as I find the natural figure in wood to be very appealing and aesthetically pleasing.
I've never been fond on that particular design. The center motif reminds me of the backstrip Martin uses on their guitars. I like the design as a backstrip for steelstrings though. I'm currently building a steel string for myself with that same backstrip.

I know whatcha mean about the mosaic rosettes, to me they have this "chunky" look to them that is somehow very appealing. Although I still like many others.
