Nail Protection

Evening chaps,

just a quick question about what people use to protect there nails?

i currently use a nail hardener with nylon in it. i apply 3 or four coats allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before adding the next, but after three or four days it just peels/breaks off. now that my fingers are toughening up i was wondering whether any of you could recommend a different method of nail protection.

cheers

Alex

What brand do you use?
I'm on "L'Oreal manicure ciment" which does protect my (paper thin) nails somewhat. Apart from the "peeling-effect" you describe, I don't particularily like the mother-of-pearl effect it has.

BTW: Do you coat your nails completely or just the edge?

i use sally hansen's hard as nails with nylon. i coat the wholw nail, its too finnicky to just do the ends and make them look even.

i use a product called total nail rx. got it from walgreens.
you're supposed to use it for ten days. and after that, your nails should supposedly be stronger. it's a two part system: a nail nourishing base coat then a nail hardener on top. i cover my entire nail to protect it from rasgueados.

the great thing is that it is MUCH, MUCH more resistant to peeling than hard as nails. it basically doesn't peel at all. i used to have to reapply hard as nails everyday because all of it would wear off after practice even with multiple coats.

be careful with hard as nails. i actually think it made my nails weaker. with a combination of total nail rx, a glass nail file, and shorter nails, i haven't seen breaks for a really long time.

Yeah, I found hard as nails made my nails overall weaker. Whilst they were stronger whilewearing the product, they were weaker after it peeled off.
I have been using a something by Jessica products (www.jessicacosmetics.com) called "Critical care" for soft nails. It has a protein coat that actually makes the nail harder even after it has peeled off. Mind you it has not been as strong as it it could be for the dance acompaniament.

Leo- I havent ever seen or heard of total nail rx. Is there a web site?

I got mine from a local walgreens but i found it on their online store too.

http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=306900&navAction=jump&navCount=0&nug=VPD&skuid=sku3177415&id=prod3178582

they have other treatments focused on fixing other nails problems too including slow growing nails.

i think it's definitely worth trying especially if you already use something like hard as nails.
