A cool new Cante cd Enrique El Picul...

I just got this album, its great !!!

excellent cante and excellent playing to compliment it

for me the Fandangos and the Alegrias stand out alot so far, ..i might post litlle samples from it in the audio section..

ofcourse everything else is excellent but this are the first 2 tracks that jumped at me.
if anyone wants to hear anything in peticular from the cd let me know..

Enrique Bermúdez “El Piculabe” emerge con fuerza en el panorama flamenco de la mano de Juan José Suárez “El Paquete” reconocido músico (La Barbería del Sur) y productor, ganador de dos Grammy latinos en el año 2005 y 2006.

Su álbum de debut “Camino y Tiempo”, cuenta con las colaboraciones de grandes artistas flamencos como Pepe Habichuela, José Miguel Carmona, Moraíto Chico.

A los coros y voces, nombres de la talla de Montse Cortés, La Negra, Juan Antonio Salazar y Enrique Heredia “El Negri”.

Todo un recorrido por el flamenco más auténtico y actual, al toque de tangos, bulerías, alegrías, fandangos y tarantas. Todo un abanico abierto al flamenco.

Very nice. I'll have to put it on my list. I agree completely about the style being refreshing. The Alegrias sounds like Alegrias and the Fandangos sounds like Fandangos (and without losing a modern feel). On so many newer CDs I have to look at the liner notes to figure out what palo they are playing! (maybe that's just me!)

Too bad he couldn't find some better supporting musicians though!

I was disappointed too. He's only got 5 major guitarists....and no Tomatito

Yeah i know ! and hardly any known voices...if u not gonna make an effort why bother... cheap

I wonder sometimes if the amount of known artists on theyr cds becomes like a status thing.. or the polotics involved...the obligations, a favour... the showing off thing..(maybe theyr way of indicating theyr status through the amount of known artists) etc clearely any single one of those guitarists could have done the whole album...so having this many guitarists would be more then just about "i like the way he plays the Bulerias"...because he still has to pay or share the profit with every single one (i dont know how it works)..

Its amazing to see artist of this quality play small parts, i can never get used to it lol ...eg.. in one of the Sara Baras concert Dvd she had Guadiana seat though a whole concert for just an Alegria letra and maybe another letra or 2 in the other numbers ( i couldnt belive it).. she had 2 perfectly capable singers there that normally sing for her who did most of the singing anyway....but i wonder if it was about the way Guadiana sings the 1 alegria letra or some of it was about " I can get Guadiana"

Im pretty sure that established artists will appear on a CD of a new artist if they are well liked or respected but not yet well known as a way of helping them out. There are a lot of young flamencos with oodles of talent out there...but most you will never hear of and if an established artist thinks "wow, this kid is good" they will want to help out and offer to be on the album.
I dont know about profit shares, normally they get paid a single session fee.
The DVD is like a film production so the artist will get paid by the production company anyway. It was the same on Vicente Amigos DVD with Cigala singing a couple of letras in Ciudad da las ideas and doing Palmas for the rest of the night!!!
I dont think its so much political as "amigismo". The good artists all know each other and it wouldnt surprise me at all that Sara Baras could phone up Guadiana and say "Hey, wanna sing a letra on my DVD?"

perhaps you right...about "amigismo".

i think this is his debut album ? have you heard of him before ? i know he must be important because of the people he has on the album and sings well but i havent heard of him before...

There are lots of home movies of him on YouTube, which give you some idea where he's coming from - and hear him in a normal context without all the heavy-hitting backup (not that there's anything wrong with that

) I don't know what "Piculabe" means but evidently his friends call him Cheese Face. (Sometimes he reminds me of Stephen Fry)

yeah i love em lol...a friend gave me a video of the whole Farruquito wedding...its got a blond half fat half drunk Canales on it

Not consciously... (I mean, I might have heard the name but didn't know anything about him). From the videos and the comments he's obviously very popular among the gitanos.

i was so excited when i heard that movie was coming out...with Canales...i was so disapointed when i saw it and he didnt dance ...

he could have done a dance before he died !!in a movie where a tree does the seguirilla and a tractor does precussion i gues a guy who is stabbed doing a dance solo just before he dies is just too unrealistic ..

Vengo was a pretty disturbing movie

its not exactly the kind of movie you wanna use to show your new girlfriend about what you are into .....ofcourse eversince my 13th birthday I stoped stabbing people because its just not nice..

Does EVERYONE have that video??

I got given it by a gypsy who got it off a friend of a friend and was told "this is really rare". But it seems everyone else has it too...is it the one with the 5 year old kids dancing and Niña Pastori at the piano too??
