Flamenco in Granada - Dynasties of t...

It the time of year for the Albaicin Music festival, a local affair with local artists held outdoors with fireworks, beer and tapas. Last night was a classic, with Emilio Maya and Juan Habichuela Nieto accompanying the young Kiki Morente (son of Enrique) with Jose Antonio Carmona on percussion. We had doubts as to whether Kiki would show as his name had been unceremoniously blacked out on the programme but there he was, quite shy but rock steady as he sang an impressive solea and then was joined by María Toleda for a rumba where they experimented, not unlike his Dad, with harmonies. ( yes i said a rumba for those following the rumba thread) Afterwards, Juan Ramirez took the stage and showed how a dancer can impress only using his feet and a vague flamenco flick of the hand.

Tomorrow night Patricia Guerrera takes the stage alongside another of my favourite dancers Luis de Luis.

We're expecting Stu from the foro to turn up in Granada tomorrow and if he does he is in for a treat.

Ok I am off to eat Sushi with Maya and find out how life is working in the tabloa.

Well this sounds like a good time to be in one of my favourite places - the Albaicín - especially as it's starting to get unpleasantly cold over here.

We heard him sing a bit in Madrid when he joined the fin de concierto with his sister. He can actually sing very well, but his voice just seemed to be not very strong and rather thin-sounding to us. But maybe we just heard him on a thin-sounding (not warmed up?) night. What did you think?

María Toledo is a terrific singer (and rather dishy

)

Actually even though the days are warm and sunny the nights are getting a bit chilly here, we've been lighting the fire at night. Dont suppose it compares to the cold land of the sasquatch.

Sadly still waiting for my computer to be returned. They just told me they cant retrieve my old hard disc files

so have lost ten years of flamenco photos, my wedding photos, building the house photos. And to add insult to injury when we asked for the old hard disc so we could send it to a specialist place to have another go at retrieval the apple dealer said he would have to charge me full price for the old hard disc !!!!

Anyway back to flamenco, yeah Kiki's voice is a wee bit thin compared to his Dad or sister but he's young and has a first rate teacher so am sure he will get there with practice.

And yeah I should have written 'tablao' . I was amazed to find out that they pay the men 40 euros a night but the women get only 30 euros. I guess equality has yet to reach the caves of the Sacromonte.

Oh and the favourite tipple these days is Ribera del Duero

Thats two years running I've been in Spain and not fulfilled my promise/desire to visit Granada!! I'm coming next year for sure!! Alone. So I can do my own thing!!!
