Mario Maya RIP

Sadly Mario Maya died in September. He was not a close friend but we would go for drinks some time and I enjoyed his stories. He never seemed his age as he kept his boyish looks and manner. I once had the pleasure of zooming round Granada in his Porsche. He was especially kind when we raised the money for a young dancer friend of mine Andres from Taller de Compás and Mario accepted him into his dance school even though he did not have any ballet training. The Washington Post has published an orbituary which I'll post here
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/09/AR2008100903068.html

The mention of Jose Heredía Maya, the writer and poet is also poignant for me as he was my professor at University, he had 2 PHDs and he used to complain that it made no difference they still only paid the same wage. He would bring flamenco singers and palmeros into class to demonstrate the rythmns of Lorca's poetry and drama. Sadly he recently had a stroke and is no longer as fit as he was but he was recently awarded with the prize for Literature from the Institute for Gypsy Culture.

The last time I bumped into Mario I was walking round the Albaicin with Ailsa and Dave. We were heading to the Peña and Mario was standing in the street staring around him. I greeted him and introduced Ailsa and dave and asked if he was OK. He smiled and said "I am being a tourist in my own town. Just looking around".

Such a shame. I enjoyed his troupe in London and Jerez.

Sorry to hear this news. I only met him once, but he made an impression.
Funnily enough, it was exactly like in your story:

I greeted him and introduced Ailsa and dave and asked if he was OK. He smiled and said "I am being a tourist in my own town. Just looking around".

We were coming from La Bulería, heading for the Platería, and there he was, just as you described him, "being a tourist".

A week or so later as I was buying something at El Flamenco Vive in Madrid I noticed him looking at me from a postcard.

Oh sorry bro', yes it wasn't Ailsa and Dave it was you and Des. My mistake. It's nice to have a last memory of some-one. Do you remember how everyone in the Peña was concerned for him as he did not seem like himself? Today I saw his phone number on my mobile and couldn't bring myself to delete it.

I think I was one of the first to sign up when Simon put the forum together. It's still the best flamenco forum in the world :)
