My next flamenco CD

We all have a wish list of CDs we are going to buy. Well mine just got longer and I think I'll buy this next.

I've just seen the video for Pitingo's version of "Killing Me Softly". I had heard it before when me, Pimiento and H had dinner with the dancer from Taller de Compás who had a copy. I was sort of gobsmacked at first, then thought that it was well done then forgot about it but having just seen the video jogged my memory. The video is ace with gospel singers and well known Habichuelas playing guitar and percussion. Cante jondo it's not but I think this is possibly the best fusion that I've come across and its an excellent production.

So am going out to treat myself tomorrow. And no doubt while browsing round Gran Via record shop my wish list will get longer still.

From this Pitingo's cd I REALLY like the Solea. But that's about all... it's just me, I'm not really into this kind of fusion.
The only fusion that's been done in flamenco and that I really like is that qawwali-flamenco project with Chicuelo, Poveda, Duquende and Faiz Ali Faiz. IMO the best fusion project I've came across.

Yeah just found it

Spot the Habichuelas !! I just love this flamenco soul gospel. I dont think of it as fusion more like a pop flamenco cover version.

Also found Qawwali Flamenco

You are right Matic, this is an excellent fusion of flamenco with Qawwali. Can you tell us more about Qawwali, where are they from ?

There have actually been quite a few words said on this fusion on this foro. Especially by Ricardo, he made some great posts from theoretical point of view.
Guys making this fusion were not only facing the difficulties from musical point of view (differences in fundamental characteristics of the 2 musical genres [tonal-modal...read Ricardos posts]) but also from let's call it the ethical point of view since qawwali is essentially a religious singing, the lyrich are from the Qur'an, which we can't say for Flamenco where we often (or in most cases) hear the profane letras... But this problem the qawwali artists already faced with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who, to my knowledge, is a Camaron of qawwali, when he exposed the music to the wider audiences and also fused the music with pop and electronic music - which was probably a big sin for the 'puros'...
Well, I made a little research a year ao on qawwali and found this stuff amazing. I absolutely recommend it. Btw, the 'point' of performing this music is to get into a deep state, duende, trance ... there are many similarities with flamenco!
